Translation

✧ Then the year 361 AH began Mention of what the Byzantines did to al-Jazīrah In this year, in al-Muḥarram, the king of the Byzantines raided al-Ruhā and its environs, and he marched through the lands of al-Jazīrah until they reached Naṣībīn. They took booty, enslaved, burned, and devastated the lands, and they did the like to the lands of Bakr. And there was no movement on the part of Abū Taghlib b. Ḥamdān concerning that, nor any effort to repel him, but he conveyed to him wealth by which he held him back from himself. So a group of the people of those lands traveled to Baghdādh seeking to call for help, and they stood in the congregational mosques and the shrines, and they called upon the Muslims to rise up, and they mentioned what the Byzantines had done of plunder, killing, captivity, and enslavement. The people deemed it grave, and the people of al-Jazīrah frightened them of the opening of the road and the Byzantines’ greed, and that there was no defender for them among them. So the people of Baghdādh gathered with them, and they headed to the palace of the Caliph al-Ṭāʾiʿ li-llāh, and they wanted to storm him, but they were prevented from that, and the gates were closed, and they were made to hear what it is disgraceful to mention. At that time, Bakhtiyār was hunting in al-Kūfah, so the notables of the people of Baghdādh went out to him seeking aid, reproaching him for occupying himself with hunting and fighting ʿImrān b. Shāhīn, who was a Muslim, and leaving off jihād against the Byzantines, and preventing them from the lands of Islām until they had penetrated deep into them. He promised them to prepare for the expedition, and he sent to Subuktikīn commanding him to prepare for the raid and to call upon the common people to rise up. Subuktikīn did that, and a great number of the common people gathered, too many to be counted. Bakhtiyār wrote to Abū Taghlib b. Ḥamdān, the ruler of al-Mawṣil, commanding him to prepare provisions and fodder, and informing him of his resolve for the expedition. He answered him by showing joy and preparing what was requested of him.
