Translation
✧ Murrah: with ḍammah on the mīm. In what is transmitted from it, there are several views. One of them: that it is transferred from the description of ḥanẓalah (colocynth) and ʿalqamah (bitter colocynth), and they often name with Ḥanẓalah and ʿAlqamah. The tāʾ on this view is for the feminine. The second: that it is transferred from the description of a man with bitterness. Abū ʿUbayd said this. It is said: marra al-shayʾ and amarra when its bitterness became intense. Al-Suhaylī said: And this is strengthened by their saying: Tamīm b. Murr. The tāʾ on this view is for intensiveness. The third: Al-Suhaylī said: And I think that it is from the names given after plants, because Abū Ḥanīfah mentioned that al-murrah is a herb which is cut and eaten with vinegar, its leaves resembling the leaves of hindibāʾ (chicory). The fourth: that it is taken from strength, as in His saying, the Exalted: dhū mirrah, meaning strength. And it is said: marra al-rajul when he made his craft firm. The fifth: that it is transferred from their saying: marra al-shayʾ when its bitterness became intense. The Exalted said: wa-al-sāʿah adhā wa-amarr. Ibn Diḥyah transmitted this from Abū ʿUbaydah. And he is given the kunyah Abū Yaqaẓah. The mother of Murrah: Makhshiyyah bt. Shaybān b. Muḥārib b. Fihr. His full brothers: Huṣayṣ and ʿAdī. It is said: the mother of ʿAdī is Raqāsh bt. Rukbah b. Nāʾilah b. Kaʿb b. Ḥarb b. Tamīm b. Saʿd b. Fahm b. ʿAmr b. Qays ʿAylān. (Huṣayṣ: with ḍammah on the hāʾ, and fatḥah on the unpointed ṣād, after it a yāʾ with two dots beneath, and a second ṣād). Ibn Isḥāq said: He is in the lineage of Ghaṭafān: Murrah b. ʿAwf b. Saʿd b. Dhubyān b. Baghīḍ b. Rayth b. Ghaṭafān. And they say, when this lineage is mentioned to them: We do not deny it nor reject it, and it is the most beloved lineage to us. And al-Ḥārith b. Ẓālim b. Judhaymah b. Yarbūʿ said — Ibn Hishām said: one of the Banū Murrah b. ʿAwf — when he fled from al-Nuʿmān b. al-Mundhir and joined Quraysh: : My people are not Thaʿlabah b. Saʿd nor Fazārah of the hairy necks And my people, if you ask, are Banū Luʾayy in Makkah; they taught Muḍar the striking — We acted foolishly in following Banū Baghīḍ and leaving those nearest to us as kin — The foolishness of one who goes back on what is hoped for, who spilled the water and followed the mirage — If you had been obeyed, by your life, you would have been among them, and I would not have been found seeking pasture in the clouds — And Rawāḥah the Qurashī's saddle girths creaked with a she-camel, and he sought no reward. Ibn Hishām said: This is what Abū ʿUbaydah recited to me from it. Ibn Isḥāq said: Al-Ḥuṣayn b. al-Ḥumām al-Murrī, then one of the Banū Sahm b. Murrah, said in reply to al-Ḥārith b. Ẓālim, and he affiliates himself with Ghaṭafān: : Indeed you are not from us, and we are not to you; we declare ourselves innocent before you of Luʾayy b. Ghālib. We remained upon the might of the Ḥijāz, while you are in the meeting-place of al-Baṭḥāʾ among the Akhāshib — meaning Quraysh. Then al-Ḥuṣayn regretted what he said, and recognized what al-Ḥārith b. Ẓālim had said, so he affiliated himself with Quraysh and gave the lie to himself, and he said: : I regretted a saying that passed which I had said, in which I came to see that it was a lying saying. Would that my tongue had been two halves: of them one mute, and half at the course of the stars. Our father was a Kinānī, in Makkah is his grave, in the meeting-place of al-Baṭḥāʾ among the Akhāshib. To us belongs the fourth of the Sacred House by inheritance, and the fourth of the Biṭāḥ near the house of Ibn Ḥāṭib — that is, that the Banū Luʾayy were four: Kaʿb, ʿĀmir, Sāmah, and ʿAwf. Ibn Isḥāq said: And someone whom I do not suspect told me: that ʿUmar b. al-Khaṭṭāb ؓ said to men of the Banū Murrah: If you wish to return to your lineage, then return to it. [ The chiefs of Murrah ] Ibn Isḥāq said: The people were nobles among Ghaṭafān; they were their chiefs and their leaders. Among them: Harim b. Sinān b. Abī Ḥārithah [ b. Murrah b. Nushbah ] , Khārijah b. Sinān b. Abī Ḥārithah, al-Ḥārith b. ʿAwf, al-Ḥuṣayn b. al-Ḥumām, and Hāshim b. Ḥarmalah about whom the poet says: : Hāshim b. Ḥarmalah revived his father on the day of al-Habāʾāt and the day of al-Yaʿmalah. You see the kings before him sifted — he kills the guilty and the guiltless. [ Hāshim b. Ḥarmalah, and ʿĀmir al-Khaṣafī ] Ibn Hishām said: Abū ʿUbaydah recited to me these verses of ʿĀmir al-Khaṣafī, Khaṣafah b. Qays b. ʿAylān: : Hāshim b. Ḥarmalah revived his father on the day of al-Habāʾāt and the day of al-Yaʿmalah. You see the kings before him sifted — he kills the guilty and the guiltless. And his spear is a problem for mothers. And he told me that Hāshim said to ʿĀmir: Say about me a good verse, and I will reward you for it. So ʿĀmir said the first verse, and it did not please Hāshim; then he said the second, and it did not please him; then he said the third, and it did not please him. When he said the fourth: He kills the guilty and the guiltless — it pleased him, so he rewarded him for it. Ibn Hishām said: And that is what al-Kumayt b. Zayd intended in his saying: : And Hāshim Murrah, who destroys kings without guilt to him, and the guilty — And this verse is in a poem of his. And ʿĀmir's saying: the day of al-Habāʾāt is from other than Abū ʿUbaydah. [ Murrah and the basl ] Ibn Isḥāq said: A people with repute and mention in Ghaṭafān and all of Qays, so they kept to their lineage, and among them was the basl. The matter of the basl [ Definition of basl, and the lineage of Zuhayr the poet ] And the basl — as they claim — is eight sacred months, theirs from every year among the Arabs; the Arabs acknowledged that for them, not denying it nor rejecting it. They travel with it to whichever lands of the Arabs they wish, fearing nothing from them. Zuhayr b. Abī Sulmā said, meaning the Banū Murrah: — Ibn Hishām said: Zuhayr is one of the Banū Muzaynah b. Udd b. Ṭābikhah b. Ilyās b. Muḍar. And it is said: Zuhayr b. Abī Sulmā is from Ghaṭafān, and it is said: an ally among Ghaṭafān: Consider: if al-Marūrāt is emptied of them and its dwellings, then no palms are emptied of them. Lands where I consorted with them and befriended them; if you two are emptied of them, then they are basl — He says: they traveled in their sacred territory. Ibn Hishām said: And these two verses are in a poem of his. Ibn Isḥāq said: And Aʿshā of the Banū Qays b. Thaʿlabah said: : Your neighbor woman is basl, forbidden upon us, and our neighbor woman is lawful to you, and her husband — Ibn Hishām said: And this verse is in a poem of his. [ The children of Kaʿb and their mother ] Ibn Isḥāq said: Kaʿb b. Luʾayy fathered three individuals: Murrah b. Kaʿb, ʿAdī b. Kaʿb, and Huṣayṣ b. Kaʿb. Their mother was Waḥshiyyah bt. Shaybān b. Muḥārib b. Fihr b. Mālik b. al-Naḍr. [ The children of Murrah and their mothers ] Murrah b. Kaʿb fathered three individuals: Kilāb b. Murrah, Taym b. Murrah, and Yaqaẓah b. Murrah. The mother of Kilāb: Hind bt. Surayr b. Thaʿlabah b. al-Ḥārith b. (Fihr b. Mālik) b. al-Naḍr b. Kinānah b. Khuzaymah. And the mother of Yaqaẓah: al-Bāriqiyyah, a woman from Bāriq, from al-Asd from Yemen. And it is said: she is the mother of Taym. And it is said: Taym is the son of Hind bt. Surayr, the mother of Kilāb.
