✧ Mention of the Qarmaṭīs' taking possession of Damascus In this year, in Dhū al-Qaʿdah, the Qarmaṭīs reached Damascus and took possession of it, and they killed Jaʿfar b. Falāḥ. The reason for that was that when they learned of Jaʿfar b. Falāḥ's seizure of Syria, it concerned them, unsettled them, and made them anxious, because it had been settled between them and Ibn Ṭughj that he would bring them three hundred thousand dīnārs every year. When Jaʿfar took possession of it, they knew that the money would elude them, so they resolved to make for Syria. Their leader at that time was al-Ḥusayn b. Aḥmad b. Bahrām al-Qarmaṭī. He sent to ʿIzz al-Dawlah Bakhtiyār asking him for assistance with weapons and money, and he granted him that. The matter was settled that when they arrived at al-Kūfah on their way to Syria, what had been agreed upon would be brought to them. When they arrived at al-Kūfah, that was delivered to them, and they marched to Damascus. News of them reached Jaʿfar b. Falāḥ, but he belittled them and did not guard against them. He was unaware of them until they fell upon him by surprise on the outskirts of Damascus and killed him, seizing his money, weapons, and mounts. They took possession of Damascus, granted safety to its people, and marched to al-Ramlah, taking control of all that lay between the two. When the Maghribīs who were in it heard news of them, they departed from it to Yāfā and fortified themselves there. The Qarmaṭīs took possession of al-Ramlah and marched to Egypt, leaving behind at Yāfā those who would besiege it. When they reached Egypt, a great multitude, the army, the Ikhshīdīs, and the Kāfūrīs gathered with them. They assembled at ʿAyn Shams near Egypt, and the armies of Jawhar gathered and went out against them. They fought more than once, with victory in all those days belonging to the Qarmaṭīs, and they besieged the Maghribīs severely. Then one day the Maghribīs came out of Egypt and charged the right wing of the Qarmaṭīs, and those in it of Arabs and others were routed. They made for the Qarmaṭīs' camp and plundered it, compelling them to depart. So they returned to Syria and encamped at al-Ramlah. Then they besieged Yāfā severely and pressed hard upon those within it. Jawhar sent from Egypt a relief force to his besieged companions at Yāfā, with provisions in fifteen ships. The Qarmaṭīs sent their ships against them and captured Jawhar's ships. None escaped except two ships, which the Byzantine ships plundered. Al-Ḥusayn b. Bahrām, the leader of the Qarmaṭīs, had poetry. Among it, concerning the Maghribīs, the followers of al-Muʿizz li-Dīn Allāh, is: The men of the West claimed that I feared them; my blood, then, is not avenged among them. O Egypt, if I do not water your land with blood that drenches your soil, then may the Nile not give me drink.
