Then the year 360 AH began
ذِكْرُ قَتْلِ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ الْحُسَيْنِ الزَّنَاتِيِّ فِي هَذِهِ السَّنَةِ قَتَلَ يُوسُفُ بُلُكِّينُ بْنُ زِيرِي مُحَمَّدَ بْنَ الْحُسَيْنِ بْنِ خَزَرٍ الزَّنَاتِيَّ وَجَمَاعَةً مِنْ أَهْلِهِ وَبَنِي عَمِّهِ، وَكَانَ قَدْ عَصَى عَلَى الْمُعِزِّ لِدِينِ اللَّهِ بِإِفْرِيقِيَّةَ، وَكَثُرَ جَمْعُهُ مِنْ زَنَاتَةَ وَالْبَرْبَرِ، فَأَهَمَّ الْمُعِزَّ أَمْرُهُ لِأَنَّهُ أَرَادَ الْخُرُوجَ إِلَى مِصْرَ، فَخَافَ أَنْ يُخَلِّفَ مُحَمَّدًا فِي الْبِلَادِ عَاصِيًا، وَكَانَ جَبَّارًا عَاتِيًا طَاغِيًا. وَأَمَّا كَيْفِيَّةُ قَتْلِهِ فَإِنَّهُ كَانَ يَشْرَبُ هُوَ وَجَمَاعَةٌ مِنْ أَهْلِهِ وَأَصْحَابِهِ، فَعَلِمَ يُوسُفُ بِهِ، فَسَارَ إِلَيْهِ جَرِيدَةً مُتَخَفِّيًا، فَلَمْ يَشْعُرْ بِهِ مُحَمَّدٌ حَتَّى دَخَلَ عَلَيْهِ، فَلَمَّا رَآهُ مُحَمَّدٌ قَتَلَ نَفْسَهُ بِسَيْفِهِ، وَقَتَلَ يُوسُفُ الْبَاقِينَ وَأَسَرَ مِنْهُمْ، فَحَلَّ ذَلِكَ عِنْدَ الْمُعِزِّ مَحِلًّا عَظِيمًا، وَقَعَدَ لِلْهَنَاءِ بِهِ ثَلَاثَةَ أَيَّامٍ.
Translation
✧ Mention of the killing of Muḥammad b. al-Ḥusayn al-Zanātī In this year, Yūsuf Bulukkīn b. Zīrī killed Muḥammad b. al-Ḥusayn b. Khazar al-Zanātī and a group of his family and his paternal cousins. He had rebelled against al-Muʿizz li-Dīn Allāh in Ifrīqiya, and his following among the Zanāta and the Berbers had grown large. His affair concerned al-Muʿizz because he wanted to set out for Egypt, and he feared leaving Muḥammad behind in the lands as a rebel. He was tyrannical, arrogant, and overbearing. As for the manner of his killing, he was drinking with a group of his family and companions, and Yūsuf learned of him. He marched against him with a raiding party in disguise, and Muḥammad was unaware of him until he entered upon him. When Muḥammad saw him, he killed himself with his own sword. Yūsuf killed the rest and took some of them captive. This pleased al-Muʿizz greatly, and he sat for congratulations for three days.
