✧ Mention of the pledge of allegiance to Muhammad b. al-Mustakfī. In this year there appeared in Baghdādh, among the elite and the common people, a call to a man from the People of the House whose name was Muḥammad b. ʿAbd Allāh. It was said that he was the Dajjāl whom the Messenger of God ﷺ had foretold, and that he commands the good and forbids the evil and renews what has been effaced of the matters of religion. To whoever was of the People of the Sunnah, it was said that he was an ʿAbbāsid; and to whoever was of the People of the Shīʿah, it was said that he was an ʿAlawī. So the summoners to him and the pledges of allegiance to him multiplied. The man was in Miṣr, and Kāfūr al-Ikhshīdī had honored him and treated him kindly. Among those who pledged allegiance to him was Subuktikīn al-ʿAjamī, one of the chief commanders of Muʿizz al-Dawlah, and he was a Shīʿī. He thought him an ʿAlawī and wrote to him summoning him from Miṣr. So he traveled to al-Anbār, and Subuktikīn went out to the road of the Euphrates, undertaking his protection. He met Ibn al-Mustakfī, dismounted for him, served him, took him, and returned to Baghdādh, not doubting that the matter would be accomplished for him. Then it became clear to Subuktikīn that the man was an ʿAbbāsid, so he turned back from that opinion. Ibn al-Mustakfī realized and he and his companions feared, so they fled and scattered. Ibn al-Mustakfī was seized, and with him a brother of his, and they were brought before Bakhtiyār, who gave them safe-conduct. Then al-Muṭīʿ received him from Bakhtiyār, cut off his nose, and afterward his news was concealed.
