✧ Mention of ʿAḍud al-Dawlah's seizure of Kirmān in this year, ʿAḍud al-Dawlah took possession of the lands of Kirmān. The reason for that was that Abū ʿAlī b. Ilyās had been its ruler for a long period, as we have mentioned. Then he suffered a hemiplegia, and feared for his life. So he gathered the eldest of his sons, who were three: Ilyasaʿ, Ilyās, and Sulaymān. He apologized to Ilyasaʿ for an old harshness that had come from him towards him, and appointed him to the command, then after him his brother Ilyās. He commanded Sulaymān to return to their lands, which were the lands of al-Ṣughd, and commanded him to take some properties of his there. He intended to keep him away from Ilyasaʿ because of an enmity that was between them. So he departed from his father and seized al-Sīrajān. When that reached his father, he dispatched Ilyasaʿ to him with an army, and commanded him to fight him and expel him from the lands, and not to enable him to head for al-Ṣughd if he sought that. So he marched to him, besieged him, and Ilyasaʿ gained the upper hand over him at al-Sīrajān and seized it, and commanded that it be plundered, and it was plundered. The qāḍī and the notables of the town asked him to pardon them, and he pardoned them. Then a group of his father's companions feared him, and they maligned him to his father, so he seized him and imprisoned him in a fortress of his. His mother went to his brother Ilyās and said to her: 'Our master has annulled what he had concluded for my son, and afterwards he will do the like to your son, and will remove the kingship from the house of Ilyās. The right course is that you help me to free my son so that the matter may return to what it was.' His father Abū ʿAlī was seized by a swoon at some times, and would remain for a long while without understanding. The two women agreed and gathered the slave-girls at the time of his swoon, and they brought Ilyasaʿ out of his prison and lowered him from the back of the fortress to the ground. He broke his fetter and made for the army. They rejoiced at him and obeyed him. Those who had corrupted his situation with his father fled from him, and he seized some of them, while some escaped. He advanced to the fortress to besiege it. When his father regained consciousness and understood the situation, he corresponded with his son, and asked him to refrain from him and grant him safety for his property and family, so that the fortress and all the districts of Kirmān would be surrendered to him, and he would depart for Khurāsān, and be a support for him there. He agreed to that, and surrendered to him the fortress and much wealth, and took with him what he wanted to Khurāsān. He headed for Bukhārā, and the amīr Manṣūr b. Nūḥ honored him, treated him well, and brought him near to him. He incited Manṣūr to equip the armies towards al-Rayy and to aim for the Banū Buwayh, as we have mentioned. He remained with him until he died in the year 356 AH of the illness of hemiplegia, as we have mentioned. His son Sulaymān was also in Bukhārā. As for Ilyasaʿ, Kirmān was cleared for him. The luxury of youth and his ignorance drove him to contend with ʿAḍud al-Dawlah over some of the borders of his province. A group of ʿAḍud al-Dawlah's companions came to him, and he treated them well. Then some of them returned to ʿAḍud al-Dawlah, so Ilyasaʿ suspected those who remained, and he punished them and mutilated them. Then a group of his companions sought safe-conduct with ʿAḍud al-Dawlah, and he treated them well, honored them, and gave them gifts. When his companions saw the great difference between the two situations, they banded together against him and left him, slipping away to ʿAḍud al-Dawlah. About a thousand men of the leading figures of his companions came to him in one batch, so he remained with his private retinue, and most of his army left him. When he saw that, he took his wealth and his family and traveled with them towards Bukhārā, not turning aside for anything. ʿAḍud al-Dawlah marched to Kirmān, took it over, seized it, and took what was in it of the wealth of the house of Ilyās. That was in the month of Ramaḍān. He granted it as a fief to his son Abū al-Fawāris, who was later titled Sharaf al-Dawlah, and who ruled Iraq. He appointed Kūrtikīn b. Jastān as his deputy over it, and returned to Fārs. The ruler of Sijistān corresponded with him and gave the khuṭbah for him there. This too was a weakening for the Banū Sāmān and among the things that brought greed upon them. As for Ilyasaʿ, when he reached Bukhārā, he was honored and treated well. He began to disparage the people of Sāmān for their sitting back from supporting him and restoring him to his kingdom, so he was banished from Bukhārā to Khwārazm. The news of him reached Abū ʿAlī b. Sīmjūr, so he made for his wealth and baggage, which were left behind in some districts of Khurāsān, and he took possession of all of that. A severe ophthalmia afflicted Ilyasaʿ in Khwārazm, and it distressed him. Impatience and lack of fortune drove him to pluck out his inflamed eye with his own hand. That was the cause of his death. The house of Ilyās had no more rule in Kirmān. What befell him was because of the ill omen of his disobedience to his father and the fruit of his ingratitude.
