Translation

✧ Ibn ʿAbd Manāf ʿAbd Manāf: Al-Suhaylī said: [It is a maʿfil form from anāfa, yunīfu, ināfah: when it rose. And al-Mufaḍḍal, may God Almighty have mercy on him, said: al-ināfah is elevation and increase. By this ʿAbd Manāf was named. From it you say: a hundred and some (miʾah wa-nayyif), i.e. something added to the hundred.] His name was al-Mughīrah, transferred from the description. The hāʾ in it is for intensification. That is, that he raids (yughīru) against the enemies. Or mughīr from aghāra al-ḥabla, when he made it firm. The hāʾ entered for intensification, just as it entered in ʿallāmah and nassābah. Al-Suhaylī, may God Almighty have mercy on him, said: It is possible that the hāʾ in al-mughīrah is for the feminine, and that it is transferred from the description of a feminine noun. His kunyah was Abū Shams. His mother was Ḥubbā, with ḍammah on the undotted ḥāʾ and doubling of the dotted bāʾ inclined (al-mumālah). He used to be called Qamar al-Baṭḥāʾ (Moon of the Valley) because of his beauty. The reason for his being titled ʿAbd Manāf is that his mother Ḥubbā bt. Ḥulayl, with ḍammah on the undotted ḥāʾ and fatḥah on the lām, son of Ḥubshiyyah, with ḍammah on the undotted ḥāʾ, and it is said with fatḥah on it, and sukūn on the dotted bāʾ, and kasrah on the dotted shīn, and doubling of the yāʾ, and it is said without doubling, son of Salūl, with fatḥah on the undotted sīn and two lāms, the first having ḍammah, son of Kaʿb b. Khuzāʿah, had placed him in the service of Manāt, and it was a great idol of theirs, so he was named ʿAbd Manāt after it. Then his father Quṣayy looked and saw that he corresponded with ʿAbd Manāt b. Kinānah, so he changed him to ʿAbd Manāf. He attained leadership during his father's lifetime and was obeyed among Quraysh. It was him the poet meant by his saying: Quraysh was an egg, then it split apart; its pure yolk went to ʿAbd Manāf. Al-muḥḥ, with undotted ḥāʾ: the yellow of the egg. Al-Balādhurī related from Zayd b. Aslam, may God Almighty have mercy on him, that the Messenger of God ﷺ heard a girl chanting: Quraysh was an egg, then it split apart; its pure yolk went to ʿAbd al-Dār. The Messenger of God ﷺ said to Abū Bakr: "Is that what the poet said?" Abū Bakr said: "No. He only said: to ʿAbd Manāf." He said: "It is so." Al-Balādhurī said: They claimed that a writing was found in a stone: that al-Mughīrah enjoined Quraysh to fear God and maintain ties of kinship.
