✧ Mention of the departure of the armies of Khurasan and the death of Washmakir In this year, the Emir Mansur b. Nuh, ruler of Khurasan and Transoxiana, equipped armies to go to Rayy. The reason for that was that Abu 'Ali b. Ilyas went from Kirman to Bukhara, seeking refuge with the Emir Mansur, as we shall mention, God Almighty willing. When he arrived before him, he honored him and treated him with respect, and made him covet the realm of the Buwayhids, and made appealing to him the idea of aiming for it, and informed him that his deputies were not sincere to him, and that they took bribes from the Daylamites. That coincided with what Washmakir had been telling him. So the Emir Mansur wrote to Washmakir and al-Hasan b. al-Fayrazan, informing them of what he had resolved upon of aiming for Rayy, and ordering them to prepare for that so that they would march with his army. Then he equipped the armies and sent them with the commander of the armies of Khurasan, who was Abu al-Hasan Muhammad b. Ibrahim Simjur al-Dawati, and ordered him to obey Washmakir, to submit to him, to act according to his command, and to make him the commander of all the armies. When the news reached Rukn al-Dawla, what he had not expected came upon him, and he was seized with anxiety. He knew that the matter had reached its utmost limit, so he sent his sons and his family to Isfahan, and wrote to his son 'Adud al-Dawla asking for aid, and also wrote to his nephew 'Izz al-Dawla Bakhtiyar asking for help. As for 'Adud al-Dawla, he equipped the armies and sent them by the Khurasan route, and made it appear that he intended to aim for Khurasan because it was devoid of armies. The news reached the people of Khurasan, so they hesitated a little, then they marched until they reached Damghan. Rukn al-Dawla came out with his armies from Rayy towards them. Then the death of Washmakir happened, and the cause of his death was that gifts had come to him from the ruler of Khurasan, among which were horses. He reviewed the horses, chose one of them, and rode it for hunting. A boar, which had been struck by a spear that was still fixed in it, crossed his path, and the boar charged at Washmakir while he was unaware. It struck the horse, which reared under him and threw him to the ground. Blood came out of his ears and his nose, and he was carried away dead. That was in Muharram of the year fifty-seven and three hundred [i.e., 357 AH], and all that they had been engaged in was disrupted, and God spared Rukn al-Dawla their evil. When Washmakir died, his son Bisutun took his place, and he corresponded with Rukn al-Dawla and made peace with him, and Rukn al-Dawla supplied him with money and men. Among the most amazing things that is told, which encourages good intention and generosity of power, is that when the armies of Khurasan gathered with Washmakir and he marched, he wrote to Rukn al-Dawla threatening him with various kinds of intimidation and menace, saying: By God, if I capture you, I will do such and such to you and I will do such and such, in ugly words. The secretary did not dare to read it, but Rukn al-Dawla took it and read it, and said to the secretary: Write to him: As for your gathering and your mustering, you have never been more insignificant to me than you are now. As for your threatening and your menacing, by God, if I capture you, I will treat you with the opposite, and I will do good to you and honor you. So Washmakir met the evil of his intention, and Rukn al-Dawla met the good of his intention. In Tabaristan, there was an enemy of Rukn al-Dawla called Nuh b. Nasr, who was fiercely hostile to him, and who never ceased to gather forces against him and to aim at the borders of his lands. He died at that time. Also, in Hamadhan, a man called Ahmad b. Harun al-Hamadhani rebelled against him when he saw the departure of the armies of Khurasan, and he proclaimed disobedience. But when the news of Washmakir's death reached him, he died on the spot, and God spared Rukn al-Dawla the worry of them all.
