Translation
✧ Mention of the evil conduct of Bakhtiyar and the corruption of his state When Muʿizz al-Dawlah was near death, he enjoined his son Bakhtiyar to obey his uncle Rukn al-Dawlah, and to consult him in everything he did, and to obey his cousin ʿAḍud al-Dawlah, because he was older than him and more capable in governance. He also enjoined him to confirm his two secretaries, Abū al-Faḍl al-ʿAbbās b. al-Ḥusayn and Abū al-Faraj Muḥammad b. al-ʿAbbās, on account of their competence and trustworthiness, and he enjoined him regarding the Daylamites and the Turks, and the chamberlain Subuktikīn. But he contravened all these injunctions, and occupied himself with amusement and play, the company of women, clowns, and singers, and he began to alienate his two secretaries and Subuktikīn, so they became estranged, and Subuktikīn cut himself off from him and did not attend his court. He banished the notables of the Daylamites from his kingdom—its evil—to their fiefs and their wealth and the wealth of those attached to them. So their lesser members united against him, and demanded increases, and he was compelled to appease them, and the Turks followed their example and did likewise. He could not accomplish against Subuktikīn what he wanted because of his caution, and the Turks agreed with him, and the Daylamites went out to the open country and demanded that Bakhtiyar restore those of them whom he had dropped, so he had to answer them because of the change of Subuktikīn against him, and the Turks also did the same as they had done. The news of the death of Muʿizz al-Dawlah reached his secretary Abū al-Faraj Muḥammad b. al-ʿAbbās, while he was in charge of the affairs of Oman, so he handed it over to the deputies of ʿAḍud al-Dawlah and set out toward Baghdad. The reason for his handing it over to ʿAḍud al-Dawlah was that when Bakhtiyar assumed power after the death of his father, Abū al-Faḍl became solely responsible for the affairs, so Abū al-Faraj feared that his sole authority would continue over him, so he handed Oman over to ʿAḍud al-Dawlah lest he be ordered to remain there to guard it and set it right, and he traveled to Baghdad, but he could not achieve what he intended, and Abū al-Faḍl was made sole vizier.
