Creation of the jinn and the story of Satan
Translation
✧ Allah, the Exalted, said: And We have adorned the nearest heaven with lamps and made them [as] missiles to drive away the devils, and We have prepared for them the punishment of the Blaze [al-Mulk: 5]. And He said: Indeed, We have adorned the nearest heaven with an adornment, the stars, and [as] protection against every rebellious devil. They do not listen to the exalted assembly, and they are pelted from every side, repelled; and for them is a constant punishment—except one who snatches a fragment, and a piercing flame pursues him [al-Saffat: 6-10]. And He, the Exalted, said: And We have placed in the heaven constellations and beautified it for the observers, and We have protected it from every accursed devil—except one who steals a hearing, and a clear flame pursues him [al-Hijr: 16-18]. And He, the Exalted, said: And the devils did not bring it down, nor is it befitting for them, nor are they able. Indeed, they are from hearing, [utterly] debarred [al-Shu'ara': 210-212]. And He, the Exalted, said, reporting from the jinn: And we have sought [to reach] the heaven but found it filled with stern guards and flames. And we used to sit in positions for hearing, but whoever listens now will find a flame lying in wait for him [al-Jinn: 8-9]. Al-Bukhari said, with his chain of narration, from 'A'ishah, from the Prophet ﷺ, who said: The angels converse in the 'anan—and 'anan is the clouds—about a matter that is to occur on the earth, and the devils hear a word, so they whisper it into the ear of the soothsayer as a bottle is [filled], and they add to it a hundred lies. He was alone in [recording] these two paths, apart from Muslim. And al-Bukhari narrated in another place, and Muslim, from the hadith of al-Zuhri, from Yahya b. 'Urwah b. al-Zubayr, from his father, who said: 'A'ishah said: People asked the Prophet ﷺ about soothsayers, and he said: They are of no account. They said: O Messenger of Allah, they sometimes tell us something, and it comes true. So the Prophet ﷺ said: That word is from the truth which the jinni snatches and then gurgles into the ear of his protégé like the gurgling of a hen, and they mix with it a hundred lies. This is the wording of al-Bukhari. And al-Bukhari said, with his chain of narration, 'Amr said: I heard 'Ikrimah say: I heard Abu Hurayrah say: The Prophet of Allah ﷺ said: When Allah decrees a matter in the heaven, the angels beat their wings in submission to His word, as if it were a chain on a smooth rock. And when the terror is removed from their hearts, they say: What did your Lord say? They say to the one who spoke: The truth, and He is the Most High, the Most Great. Then the eavesdropper of hearing hears it—and the eavesdropper of hearing is like this, one above another. And Sufyan described it with his palm, turning it and separating between his fingers. So he hears the word and casts it to the one below him, then the other casts it to the one below him, until he casts it upon the tongue of the sorcerer or the soothsayer. Sometimes the flame overtakes him before he casts it, and sometimes he casts it before it overtakes him, and he lies along with it a hundred lies. Then it is said: Did he not tell us on such-and-such a day such-and-such? And he is believed because of that word which was heard from the heaven.
