Then the year 350 AH began

Translation

✧ Mention of Muʿizz al-Dawla building his residence in Baghdād In this year, in Muḥarram, Muʿizz al-Dawla fell ill, and urination was withheld from him. Then after effort and hardship he would urinate blood, and urination, stones, and sand followed. His anxiety and restlessness intensified. He summoned the vizier al-Muhallabī and the chamberlain Subuktikīn, and he reconciled between them, and enjoined them to care for his son Bakhtiyār, and he delivered all his wealth to him. Then he recovered, and he resolved to travel to al-Ahwāz, because he believed that the illnesses he repeatedly suffered were due to his residence in Baghdād, and he thought that if he returned to al-Ahwāz, the health he had enjoyed there would return to him, forgetting old age and youth. When he descended to Kalwādhā intending to head to al-Ahwāz, his companions advised him to stay, and to consider this move and not to hasten. So he stayed there, and none of his companions favored his departure, because of leaving their homelands and their regret over Baghdād, how it would be ruined by the transfer of the seat of kingship from it. They advised him to return to Baghdād and to build for himself a residence in upper Baghdād, so that it would have clearer air and purer water. He did so, and he began building his residence at the site of al-Musannāh al-Muʿizziyyah. The total spent on it until he died was thirteen million dirhams, and because of that he needed to confiscate the wealth of a group of his companions. In this year: Muʿizz al-Dawla undertook the muḥtasib's office in Baghdād and the shurṭah, all that following a weakness that afflicted him and from which he recovered. May God not have restored him.
