✧ Mention of the notables who died in this year 2598 - Azhar b. Aḥmad b. Muḥammad, Abū Ghānim al-Khiriqī. He related from Abū Qilābah al-Raqqāshī. Al-Dāraquṭnī and Ibn Razqawayh narrated from him. He used to reside on the eastern side in Sūq al-ʿAṭash. He died in this year. 2599 - Jaʿfar b. Ḥarb. Muḥammad b. Abī Ṭāhir al-Bazzāz informed us, on the authority of Abū al-Qāsim [ʿAlī] b. al-Muḥsin, on the authority of his father: Jaʿfar b. Ḥarb used to undertake major offices for the sultan, and his affluence approached that of the vizierate. One day he passed by riding in a great procession of his, his affluence at the utmost abundance and his station in its [utmost] majesty, when he heard a man reciting: "Has not the time come for those who believe that their hearts should humble themselves to the remembrance of God and to what has come down of the truth?" He cried out: "O God, yes indeed," repeating it several times [and weeping]. Then he dismounted from his beast, took off his clothes, entered the Tigris and concealed himself with the water. He did not come out of it until he had distributed all that he owned in restitution for the injustices that were upon him and restored them, and gave the remainder as charity. A man passed by and saw him standing in the water, and heard of his story, so he gave him a shirt and a waist-wrapper as a gift, and he covered himself with them. He came out and devoted himself exclusively to learning and worship until he died. 2600 - Al-Ḥusayn b. ʿAlī b. Yazīd b. Dāwūd, Abū ʿAlī al-Ḥāfiẓ al-Naysābūrī. He was born in the year 277. He was the unique one of his age in memorization, precision, and piety, foremost in the disputations of the imams, and a prolific author. Al-Dāraquṭnī mentioned him and said: "A refined imam." Along with his preeminence in the sciences, he was one of the accredited witnesses in Naysābūr. He traveled in [pursuit] of ḥadīth to distant horizons and heard from the great authorities. Ibn ʿUqdah did not humble himself before anyone as he humbled himself before Abū ʿAlī. He died in Jumādā al-Ūlā of this year. 2601 - Ḥassān b. Muḥammad b. Aḥmad b. Hārūn, Abū al-Walīd al-Qurashī al-Faqīh. The imam of the people of ḥadīth in Khurāsān in his time, the most ascetic of them and the most assiduous in worship. He studied fiqh according to the school of Abū al-ʿAbbās Ibn Surayj and heard from al-Ḥasan b. Sufyān and others, and composed [excellent works]. Abū al-Walīd Ḥassān b. Muḥammad b. Aḥmad al-Qurashī said during the illness in which he died: "My mother said to me: 'I was pregnant with you, and al-ʿAbbās b. Ḥamzah had a gathering. I asked your father's permission to attend his gathering during the ten days, and he permitted me. When it was at the end of the gathering, al-ʿAbbās b. Ḥamzah said: "Rise," so they rose and I rose. Al-ʿAbbās began to supplicate, and I said: "O God, grant me a son who is a scholar." Then I returned home and slept that night. I saw in a dream as if a man came to me and said: "Rejoice, for God has answered your supplication and granted you a male child, and made him a scholar, and he will live as long as your father lived."' She said: 'My father lived seventy-two years.'" Ḥassān said: "These seventy-two years have now been completed for me." He lived four days after this account, and died on Friday night, the fifth of Rabīʿ al-Awwal in the year 349. 2602 - Ḥamd b. Muḥammad b. Ibrāhīm b. al-Khaṭṭāb, Abū Sulaymān al-Khaṭṭābī. He heard much and composed works, among them "al-Maʿālim" in which he explained the Sunan of Abū Dāwūd, and "al-Aʿlām" in which he explained al-Bukhārī, and "Gharīb al-Ḥadīth." He had fine understanding, abundant learning, and knowledge of language, meanings, and fiqh. He had poems, among which is his saying: As long as you live, treat all people with forbearance, for you are only in the abode of forbearance. He who knows, forbears; and he who knows not will soon be seen, after a little while, as a companion of regrets. 2603 - ʿAbd al-Wāḥid b. ʿUmar b. Muḥammad b. Abī Hishām; Abū Hishām's name was Bashshār; and ʿAbd al-Wāḥid's kunyah was Abū Ṭāhir. He was among the most learned of people in the letters of the readings and the aspects of the readings, and he had works on that. He related from a group, among them Abū Bakr b. Abī Dāwūd and Ibn Mujāhid. Abū al-Ḥasan al-Ḥammāmī narrated from him. He was trustworthy and reliable, residing on the eastern side. He died in Shawwāl of this year and was buried in the cemetery of al-Khayzurān. 2604 - ʿAlī b. al-Muʾammal b. al-Ḥasan b. ʿĪsā b. Māsarjis, Abū al-Qāsim. Al-Ḥākim Abū ʿAbd Allāh said: "The proverb was struck with the intellect of our shaykh Abū al-Qāsim, and he was among the most composed of our shaykhs. He heard in Naysābūr, Baghdad, and Kufa, and related for years. I performed the pilgrimage with him in the year 341. Most of the night he recited in the litter, and when he dismounted he stood for prayer and occupied himself with nothing else. I do not know that I ever entered the circumambulation without finding him circumambulating. I heard his son Abū ʿAbd Allāh say: 'My father's eyesight weakened for three years, and he did not inform us of it until the other eye weakened; then he informed us.'" He died in Ṣafar of this year. 2605 - Al-ʿAbbās b. Muḥammad, Abū Muḥammad al-Jawharī. He related from al-Baghawī, Ibn Dāwūd, and Ibn Ṣāʿid. Al-Ḥākim Abū ʿAbd Allāh al-Naysābūrī narrated from him and said: "He was one of the wanderers in pursuit of ḥadīth, with understanding, knowledge, and precision." He died in Ṣafar of this year. 2606 - Muḥammad b. Aḥmad b. Ibrāhīm b. Sulaymān b. Muḥammad, Abū Aḥmad al-ʿAssāl al-Aṣbahānī. He heard Muḥammad b. Ayyūb al-Rāzī, Ibrāhīm b. Zuhayr al-Ḥalwānī, Bakr b. Sahl al-Dimyāṭī, and their like. [Abū] ʿAbd Allāh b. Mandah said: "I wrote from a thousand shaykhs and did not see among them anyone more precise than Abū Aḥmad al-ʿAssāl." Abū Nuʿaym said: "Abū Aḥmad al-ʿAssāl held the judgeship, and he was among the foremost people in memorization, precision, and knowledge. He died in Ramaḍān of the year 349 [this year]." 2607 - Muḥammad b. Aḥmad b. ʿAlī b. Muḥammad b. Ibrāhīm b. Zayd b. Ḥātim, Abū Yaʿqūb al-Naḥwī. On the authority of Abū Muslim al-Kajjī, he said: He died in Egypt on Wednesday, with one night remaining of Rabīʿ al-Awwal in the year 349. In it also died Abū al-Khayr al-Aqṭaʿ al-Tīnātī, or close to this year; his age was one hundred and twenty years, and he had famous recorded miraculous deeds. (Al-Tīnātī: with a tāʾ bearing a kasrah, dotted with two dots from above, then a yāʾ dotted with two dots from below, then a nūn and an alif, then a tāʾ with two dots from above as well.)
