Translation
✧ Imām Aḥmad said with his chain of transmission on the authority of ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. ʿAbd Rabb al-Kaʿbah, who said: I came to ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿAmr while he was sitting in the shade of the Kaʿbah, and I heard him saying: While we were with the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ on a journey, he stopped at a place, and some of us were pitching their tents, some were tending their animals, and some were competing in archery, when his caller called out: "The prayer is to be held in congregation." He said: So we gathered. He said: The Messenger of Allāh ﷺ stood up and addressed us, saying: "There was no prophet before me but that he guided his community to what he knew was good for them and warned them of what he knew was evil for them. Indeed, this community of yours has had its well-being placed in its early period, and its latter period will be afflicted with severe trial and matters that you will find objectionable. Trials will come, one making the other seem insignificant. A trial will come and the believer will say, 'This is my destruction,' then it will lift. Then another trial will come and the believer will say, 'This is it,' then it will lift. So whoever among you wishes to be kept away from the Fire and to enter Paradise, let him meet his death while believing in Allāh and the Last Day, and let him bring to people what he would love to be brought to himself. And whoever gives allegiance to a leader, giving him his handshake and the fruit of his heart, let him obey him as much as he is able. Then if another comes to dispute with him, strike the neck of the other." He said: I inserted my head from among the people and said: I adjure you by Allāh, did you hear this from the Messenger of Allāh ﷺ? He said: He pointed with his hand to his two ears and said: My two ears heard it, and my heart understood it. He said: I said: This is your cousin—meaning Muʿāwiyah—who commands us to consume our wealth among ourselves wrongfully and to kill one another, while Allāh, Exalted is He, has said: "O you who believe, do not consume your wealth among yourselves wrongfully" [al-Baqarah: 188]. He said: He clasped his hands together and placed them on his forehead, then lowered his head for a while, then raised his head and said: Obey him in obedience to Allāh, and disobey him in disobedience to Allāh, Mighty and Majestic. Aḥmad also narrated it from Wakīʿ, from al-Aʿmash, with the same chain, and in it he said: "O people, there was no prophet before me but that it was incumbent upon him to guide his community to what he knew was good for them and to warn them of what he knew was evil for them." And he mentioned the rest of it in similar fashion. Likewise, Muslim, Abū Dāwūd, al-Nasāʾī, and Ibn Mājah narrated it through various routes from al-Aʿmash with the same chain. Muslim also narrated it from the ḥadīth of al-Shaʿbī, from ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. ʿAbd Rabb al-Kaʿbah, from ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿAmr, from the Prophet ﷺ, in similar wording.
