رَوَاهُ الطَّبَرَانِيُّ وَحَسَّنَ الْحَافِظُ أَبُو الْفَضْلِ الْعِرَاقِيُّ ✧ The Virtue of the Arabs and Love for Them Since the Arabs are the origin of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ, it is fitting to mention some of their virtues. Ibn ʿAbbās ؓ said: There is no tribe among the Arabs but that it gave birth to the Messenger of Allah ﷺ—its Muḍarīs, its Rabīʿīs, and its Yamānīs. Narrated by ʿAbd b. Ḥumayd, Ibn Abī Usāmah, and Ibn al-Mundhir. This includes several types: The first type: that Allah, Exalted is He, chose the Arabs from His creation and chose him ﷺ from among them. From Ibn ʿUmar ؓ, he said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Allah created creation and chose from creation the Children of Ādam, and chose from the Children of Ādam the Arabs, and chose from the Arabs Muḍar, and chose from Muḍar Quraysh, and chose from Quraysh the Banū Hāshim, and chose me from the Banū Hāshim. Thus I am the choicest of the choicest, from choicest to choicest. Whoever loves the Arabs, it is because of love for me that he loves them, and whoever hates the Arabs, it is because of hatred for me that he hates them." Narrated by al-Ṭabarānī, al-Ḥākim, al-Bayhaqī, and Abū Nuʿaym. And from him also, he said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "When Allah created creation, He chose the Arabs, then chose from the Arabs Quraysh, then chose from Quraysh the Banū Hāshim, then chose me from the Banū Hāshim. Thus I am the choicest of the choicest." Narrated by al-Ḥākim and he declared it authentic. From Abū Hurayrah ؓ, he said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "When Allah created creation, He sent Jibrīl and divided people into two groups: He set the Arabs as one group and the non-Arabs as another. Allah's choice was among the Arabs. Then He divided the Arabs into two groups: He set Yemen as one group, Muḍar as another, and Quraysh as a group. Allah's choice was among Quraysh. Then He brought me forth from the best of those among whom I belong." Narrated by al-Ṭabarānī; al-Ḥāfiẓ Abū al-Faḍl al-ʿIrāqī declared its chain good. From Wāthilah b. al-Asqaʿ ؓ, he said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Allah chose Ismāʿīl from the progeny of Ibrāhīm, chose Kinānah from the Banū Ismāʿīl, chose Quraysh from the Banū Kinānah, chose the Banū Hāshim from Quraysh, and chose me from the Banū Hāshim." Narrated by Muslim and al-Tirmidhī, who declared it authentic. Love of the Arabs is love for the Prophet ﷺ The second type: that love of the Arabs is love for the Prophet ﷺ. From Anas ؓ, he said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Whoever loves the Arabs has loved me, and whoever hates the Arabs has hated me." Narrated by al-Ṭabarānī. And from Ibn ʿUmar ؓ, that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Whoever loves the Arabs, it is because of love for me that he loves them, and whoever hates the Arabs, it is because of hatred for me that he hates them." Narrated by al-Ḥākim. Al-Ṭabarānī and al-Ḥākim narrated from Ibn ʿAbbās ؓ that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Love the Arabs for three reasons: because I am an Arab, the Qurʾān is Arabic, and the speech of the people of Paradise is Arabic." Hatred of the Arabs is departure from the religion The third type: that hatred of the Arabs is departure from the religion. From Salmān ؓ, he said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to me: "O Salmān, do not hate me, lest you depart from your religion." I said: O Messenger of Allah, how could I hate you when through you Allah guided me? He said: "You would hate the Arabs, and thus hate me." Narrated by al-Tirmidhī, who said: It is good and uncommon. From ʿAlī ؓ, he said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "No one hates the Arabs except a hypocrite." Narrated by al-Ṭabarānī. The fourth type: on the virtue of Quraysh. From Anas ؓ, he said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Love of Quraysh is faith, and hatred of them is disbelief." Narrated by al-Ṭabarānī. From Abū Hurayrah ؓ, he said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "People are followers of Quraysh in this matter: their Muslims follow their Muslims, and their disbelievers follow their disbelievers." Narrated by al-Bukhārī and Muslim. From Muʿāwiyah ؓ, the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "This affair (the caliphate) belongs to Quraysh. No one opposes them but that Allah will cast him down on his face, as long as they uphold the religion." Narrated by al-Bukhārī. From Saʿd b. Abī Waqqāṣ ؓ, he said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Whoever desires humiliation for Quraysh, Allah will humiliate him." Narrated by al-Tirmidhī, who declared it good. From ʿĀʾishah ؓ, that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Were it not that Quraysh would become overweening, I would have informed them of what they have with Allah." Narrated by Imām Aḥmad; al-ʿIrāqī declared its chain authentic. From Abū Hurayrah ؓ, he said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Seek trustworthiness among Quraysh, for a trustworthy person among Quraysh has two merits over a trustworthy person from others, and a strong person among Quraysh has two merits over a strong person from others." Narrated by al-Ṭabarānī and Abū Yaʿlā; al-Haythamī declared its chain good. From ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Ḥārith al-Zubaydī ؓ, he said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Knowledge is in Quraysh, and trustworthiness is in the Azd." Narrated by al-Ṭabarānī; al-Haythamī declared its chain good. From Rifāʿah b. Rāfiʿ ؓ, that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Quraysh are people of trustworthiness. Whoever seeks their downfall, Allah will cast him down on his nostrils." He said it three times. Narrated by al-Bazzār; its men are trustworthy. From Qatādah b. al-Nuʿmān ؓ, that he reviled Quraysh, and the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said to him: "O Qatādah, do not revile Quraysh, for perhaps you will see among them men whose works you will despise in comparison with their works, and whose deeds you will despise in comparison with their deeds, and you will envy them when you see them. Were it not that Quraysh would become overweening, I would have informed them of what they have with Allah." Narrated by Imām Aḥmad, al-Ṭabarānī, and al-Bazzār; al-ʿIrāqī declared its chain authentic. In another wording: Abū Qatādah al-Anṣārī al-Sulamī said to Khālid b. al-Walīd on the day of the conquest of Makkah: "This is a day on which Allah will humiliate Quraysh." Some of the companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "O Messenger of Allah, do you not hear what Abū Qatādah says?" He said: "Gently, O Abū Qatādah. If you were to weigh your forbearance against theirs, you would consider your forbearance insignificant compared with theirs. If you were to weigh your judgment against theirs, you would consider your judgment insignificant compared with theirs. If you were to weigh your deeds against theirs, you would consider your deeds insignificant compared with theirs. Do not teach Quraysh; learn from them. Were it not that Quraysh would become overweening, I would have informed them of what they have with the Lord of the Worlds." Narrated by al-Bayhaqī in al-Madkhal. From Jubayr b. Muṭʿim ؓ, he said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "O people, do not go ahead of Quraysh, lest you perish, and do not lag behind them, lest you go astray. Do not teach them; learn from them, for they are more knowledgeable than you. Were it not that Quraysh would become overweening, I would have informed them of what they have with Allah." Narrated by al-Bayhaqī in al-Madkhal; al-ʿIrāqī declared its chain good. From Umm Hāniʾ ؓ, that the Messenger of Allah ﷺ said: "Allah favored Quraysh with seven qualities that He had not given to anyone before them and will not give to anyone after them: Allah favored Quraysh in that I am from them, that prophethood is among them, that the custodianship of the Kaʿbah is among them, that the watering of the pilgrims is among them, that He granted them victory over the Elephant, that they worshipped Allah for ten years during which no one else worshipped Him, and that He sent down concerning them a sūrah of the Qurʾān that was not sent down concerning anyone else." Narrated by al-Ṭabarānī; al-ʿIrāqī declared its chain good. The ḥadīths on this are numerous. May Allah, Exalted is He, have mercy on the erudite scholar Ibn Jābir, who said in his badīʿiyyah: From the most Arab of the Arabs, except that his lineage is To Quraysh, protectors of the House and the Sanctuary, No fault is in them except that you do not see with them A guest going hungry or a neighbor wronged. No enemy faulted them except that they Did not turn the sword away from their enemy. Whoever belittles their glory, glory has turned away from him, But he is choked because they lorded over nations. There is no good in a person who does not know their rights, But he is of the people of whims and accusations. Their foes were faulted, but adorned them in that they left Their swords while they were crowns upon their heads. The blood of enemies flows from their swords Like gifts flowing from their palms. They have tales of glory like gardens when Breezes of my love for the Creator of souls bring gifts. You see the rich and the poor among them, and they Have become equal, so keep to the door of their intent. Say to the morning when their light shines, If you have this light, then smile. When the full moon appears under the night, you say to it, Are you, O full moon, or the sight of their faces? They were eyes, but for the seekers of bounty, as They were lions, but in their promises. How many a sayer said: Glory is possessed by its heir. I said: They are its heirs from their forefathers. Glory was inherited by ʿAbd Allāh Shaybah from ʿAmr b. ʿAbd Manāf from their Quṣayy. Thus he brought among them one who roamed the sky and one who Rose above the star in the lofty houses of their kin. The Arabs are the best of people, then the best of them is Quraysh, and he is from them, the best of their best. A people who, when it is said, "Who?" they say, "Your Prophet is From us." Can this be found for others? If you read "al-Naḥl," the body of their envier wastes away, And in "Barāʾah" the face of their rank appears. The people of the Prophet, so if you concern yourself with others Among mankind, you have sought fatness from a tumor. If the non-Arabs deny the virtue of the Arabs, say to them: Is the best of mankind from you or from their core? Whoever prefers the non-Arabs, may Allah break his mouth, and if They speak, they choke and belittle their Prophet.
