✧ Mention of the Khurasani troops' march to al-Rayy and Isbahan In this year the army of Khurasan marched to al-Rayy, where Rukn al-Dawla was. He had arrived there from Jurjan at the beginning of al-Muharram. He wrote to his brother Muʿizz al-Dawla asking for reinforcements, and he reinforced him with an army led by the chamberlain Subuktikīn. Another army was sent from Khurasan to Isbahan via the desert route, where the amir Abu Mansur Buwayh b. Rukn al-Dawla was. When news of them reached him, he departed from Isbahan with the treasuries and the womenfolk belonging to his father. They reached Khan Linjan. The commander of the Khurasani army was Muhammad b. Makan. They reached Isbahan and entered it, and Ibn Makan went out from it in pursuit of Buwayh. He overtook the treasuries and seized them and continued following him. It was by God's grace to him that the Ustadh Abu al-Fadl b. al-ʿAmid, the vizier of Rukn al-Dawla, joined them at that moment. He confronted Ibn Makan and fought him. Ibn al-ʿAmid's companions were routed from him, and Ibn Makan's companions busied themselves with plundering. Ibn al-ʿAmid said: I remained alone and wanted to catch up with my companions. I reflected and said: With what face shall I meet my lord when I have abandoned his children, his family, his wealth, and his kingdom, and saved only myself? I considered death easier for me than that. So I stood my ground while Ibn Makan's army was plundering my baggage and the baggage of my army. A few of Ibn al-ʿAmid's companions caught up with him and stood with him, and others came to them, and a group gathered with them. He charged the Khurasanis while they were occupied with plundering, and they shouted at them. The Khurasanis were routed and were taken between killed and captured. Ibn Makan was captured and brought before Ibn al-ʿAmid. Ibn al-ʿAmid marched to Isbahan, expelled from it those of Ibn Makan's companions who were there, restored the children and womenfolk of Rukn al-Dawla to Isbahan, and recovered his wealth. Then Rukn al-Dawla corresponded with Bakr b. Malik, the commander of the armies of Khurasan, and won him over. They made peace on the basis of money that Rukn al-Dawla would send to him, and al-Rayy and the entire region of al-Jabal would remain with Rukn al-Dawla. Rukn al-Dawla sent to his brother Muʿizz al-Dawla requesting robes of honor and a banner for the governorship of Khurasan for Bakr b. Malik, and he sent that to him.
