Then the year 344 AH began
فِي هَذِهِ السَّنَةِ وَقَعَ بِالرَّيِّ وَبَاءٌ كَثِيرٌ، مَاتَ فِيهِ مِنَ الْخَلْقِ مَا لَا يُحْصَى، وَكَانَ فِيمَنْ مَاتَ أَبُو عَلِيِّ بْنُ مُحْتَاجٍ الَّذِي كَانَ صَاحِبَ جُيُوشِ خُرَاسَانَ، وَمَاتَ مَعَهُ وَلَدُهُ، وَحُمِلَ أَبُو عَلِيٍّ إِلَى الصَّغَانِيَانِ، وَعَادَ مَنْ كَانَ مَعَهُ مِنَ الْقُوَّادِ إِلَى خُرَاسَانَ. قَالَ ابْنُ الْجَوْزِيِّ: فِيهَا شَمِلَ النَّاسَ، بِبَغْدَادَ وَوَاسِطٍ وَأَصْبَهَانَ وَالْأَهْوَازِ، دَاءٌ مُرَكَّبٌ مِنْ دَمٍ وَصَفْرَاءَ وَوَبَاءٍ، مَاتَ بِسَبَبِ ذَلِكَ خَلْقٌ كَثِيرٌ، بِحَيْثُ كَانَ يَمُوتُ فِي كُلِّ يَوْمٍ قَرِيبٌ مِنْ أَلْفِ نَفْسٍ، وَجَاءَ فِيهَا جَرَادٌ عَظِيمٌ أَكَلَ الْخُضْرَاوَاتِ وَالْأَشْجَارَ وَالثِّمَارَ.
Translation
✧ In this year a great epidemic occurred in al-Rayy, in which an incalculable number of people died. Among those who died was Abū ʿAlī b. Muḥtāj, who had been the commander of the armies of Khurāsān, and his son died with him. Abū ʿAlī was carried to al-Ṣaghāniyān, and the commanders who had been with him returned to Khurāsān. Ibn al-Jawzī said: In it a compound illness of blood, bile, and plague afflicted the people in Baghdād, Wāsiṭ, Iṣbahān, and al-Ahwāz. Because of that many people died, such that nearly a thousand souls died every day. A great swarm of locusts also came in it and ate the vegetables, trees, and fruits.
