Then the year 343 AH began
ذِكْرُ غَزَاةٍ لِسَيْفِ الدَّوْلَةِ بْنِ حَمْدَانَ فِي هَذِهِ السَّنَةِ فِي شَهْرِ رَبِيعٍ الْأَوَّلِ، غَزَا سَيْفُ الدَّوْلَةِ بْنُ حَمْدَانَ بِلَادَ الرُّومِ، فَقَتَلَ وَأَسَرَ، وَسَبَى وَغَنِمَ، وَكَانَ فِيمَنْ قُتِلَ قُسْطَنْطِينُ بْنُ الدُّمُسْتُقِ، فَعَظُمَ الْأَمْرُ عَلَى الرُّومِ، وَعَظُمَ الْأَمْرُ عَلَى الدُّمُسْتُقِ، فَجَمَعَ عَسَاكِرَهُ مِنَ الرُّومِ وَالرُّوسِ وَالْبُلْغَارِ وَغَيْرِهِمْ وَقَصَدَ الثُّغُورَ، فَسَارَ إِلَيْهِ سَيْفُ الدَّوْلَةِ بْنُ حَمْدَانَ، فَالْتَقَوْا عِنْدَ الْحَدَثِ فِي شَعْبَانَ، فَاشْتَدَّ الْقِتَالُ بَيْنَهُمْ وَصَبَرَ الْفَرِيقَانِ، ثُمَّ إِنَّ اللَّهَ - تَعَالَى - نَصَرَ الْمُسْلِمِينَ، فَانْهَزَمَ الرُّومُ، وَقُتِلَ مِنْهُمْ وَمِمَّنْ مَعَهُمْ خَلْقٌ عَظِيمٌ، وَأُسِرَ صِهْرُ الدُّمُسْتُقِ وَابْنِ ابْنَتِهِ وَكَثِيرٌ مِنْ بَطَارِقَتِهِ، وَعَادَ الدُّمُسْتُقُ مَهْزُومًا مَسْلُولًا.
Translation
✧ Mention of a raid by Sayf al-Dawlah b. Ḥamdān In this year, in the month of Rabīʿ al-Awwal, Sayf al-Dawlah b. Ḥamdān raided the land of the Byzantines. He killed, took captives, enslaved, and seized booty. Among those killed was Qusṭanṭīn b. al-Dumustuq, and the matter became grave for the Byzantines, and the matter became grave for al-Dumustuq. He gathered his armies from the Byzantines, the Russians, the Bulgars, and others, and headed for the frontier fortresses. Sayf al-Dawlah b. Ḥamdān marched against him, and they met at al-Ḥadath in Shaʿbān. The fighting between them grew intense, and both sides stood firm. Then God—exalted is He—granted victory to the Muslims, and the Byzantines were routed. A great multitude of them and of those with them were killed. The son-in-law of al-Dumustuq, the son of his daughter, and many of his patricians were taken captive. Al-Dumustuq returned defeated and stripped of his sword.
