Then the year 334 AH began
وَفِيهَا اشْتَدَّ الْغَلَاءُ بِبَغْدَادَ حَتَّى أَكَلَ النَّاسُ الْمَيْتَةَ، وَالْكِلَابَ، وَالسَّنَانِيرَ، وَأُخِذَ بَعْضُهُمْ وَمَعَهُ صَبِيٌّ قَدْ شَوَاهُ لِيَأْكُلَهُ، وَأَكَلَ النَّاسُ خَرُّوبَ الشَّوْكِ ( فَأَكْثَرُوا مِنْهُ )، وَكَانُوا يَسْلُقُونَ حَبَّهُ وَيَأْكُلُونَهُ، فَلِحَقَ النَّاسَ أَمْرَاضٌ وَأَوْرَامٌ فِي أَحْشَائِهِمْ، وَكَثُرَ فِيهِمُ الْمَوْتُ، حَتَّى عَجَزَ النَّاسُ عَنْ دَفْنِ الْمَوْتَى، فَكَانَتِ الْكِلَابُ تَأْكُلُ لُحُومَهُمْ، وَانْحَدَرَ كَثِيرٌ مِنْ أَهْلِ بَغْدَاذَ إِلَى الْبَصْرَةِ، فَمَاتَ أَكْثَرُهُمْ فِي الطَّرِيقِ، وَمَنْ وَصَلَ مِنْهُمْ، مَاتَ بَعْدَ مُدَيْدَةٍ يَسِيرَةٍ، وَبِيعَتِ الدُّورُ وَالْعَقَارُ بِالْخُبْزِ، فَلَمَّا دَخَلَتِ الْغَلَّاتُ انْحَلَّ السِّعْرُ.
Translation
✧ In it, the high cost of living intensified in Baghdad, until people ate carrion, dogs, and cats. One of them was seized with a boy whom he had roasted to eat. People ate carob of the thorn (and they consumed much of it), and they would boil its seeds and eat them. As a result, illnesses and swellings in their entrails afflicted the people, and death became widespread among them, until people were unable to bury the dead, and dogs would eat their flesh. Many of the people of Baghdad went down to Basra, and most of them died on the way; those of them who arrived died after a short while. Houses and real estate were sold for bread. But when the crops came in, prices eased.
