Translation
✧ Then the year 333 AH began. Mention of al-Muttaqī's journey to Baghdād and his deposition Al-Muttaqī lillāh had written to al-Ikhshīd Muḥammad b. Ṭughj, governor of Egypt, complaining of his situation and summoning him to come to him. He came to him from Egypt, and when he reached Aleppo, Abū ʿAbd Allāh b. Saʿīd b. Ḥamdān departed from it. Ibn Muqātil was with him there, and when he learned of his departure from it, he went into hiding. When al-Ikhshīd arrived there, Ibn Muqātil came out to him, and al-Ikhshīd honored him and appointed him over the land tax of Egypt. He remitted for him what remained of the confiscation that Nāṣir al-Dawla b. Ḥamdān had imposed on him, amounting to fifty thousand dinars. Al-Ikhshīd traveled from Aleppo and reached al-Muttaqī in mid-Muḥarram while he was at al-Raqqa. Al-Muttaqī honored and respected him. Al-Ikhshīd stood as servants stand and walked before him. Al-Muttaqī ordered him to ride, but he did not do so until al-Muttaqī dismounted. He brought al-Muttaqī magnificent gifts, as well as to the vizier Abū al-Ḥusayn b. Muqla and the rest of his companions. He urged al-Muttaqī to go with him to Egypt and Syria and be under his protection, but he refused. He advised him to remain where he was and not return to Baghdād, warning him of Tūzūn, but he refused. He advised Ibn Muqla to go with him to Egypt so that he could appoint him over all his lands, but he did not agree to that. He also warned him of Tūzūn. Ibn Muqla used to say (after that): "Al-Ikhshīd gave me sincere advice, but I did not accept his advice." He had sent messengers to Tūzūn concerning peace, as we have mentioned, and they made Tūzūn swear an oath to the caliph and the vizier. When he swore, the messengers wrote to al-Muttaqī about that. People also wrote to him about what they had witnessed of the solemnity of the oath. So al-Muttaqī descended from al-Raqqa on the Euphrates to Baghdād with four nights remaining of Muḥarram, and al-Ikhshīd returned to Egypt. When al-Muttaqī reached Hīt, he stayed there and sent someone to renew the oath from Tūzūn. He came back and swore, and he departed from Baghdād with ten nights remaining of Ṣafar to meet al-Muttaqī. He met him at al-Sindiyya. Tūzūn dismounted and kissed the ground, saying: "Here I am, having fulfilled my oath, and obedience is yours." Then he placed guards over him, the vizier, and the group, and lodged them in his own tent with al-Muttaqī's women. Then he applied kohl to him and blinded him. When he gouged out his eyes, he cried out, and those with him of the women and servants cried out, and the world was shaken. Tūzūn ordered the drums to be beaten so that their voices would not be heard, and their voices were concealed. Al-Muttaqī lillāh was blinded, and the next day Tūzūn descended to Baghdād with the group in his custody. The caliphate of al-Muttaqī lillāh lasted three years, five months, and eighteen days. He was fair-skinned with dark-rimmed eyes, and his mother was an umm walad named Khalūb. The vizierate of Ibn Muqla lasted one year, five months, and twelve days.
