✧ Mention of the notables who died in this year 2466 - Aḥmad b. Muḥammad b. Saʿīd b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān, Abū al-ʿAbbās al-Kūfī, known as Ibn ʿUqdah : He came to Baghdād and heard from Muḥammad b. ʿUbayd Allāh al-Munādī. ʿUqdah is the nickname of his father Muḥammad; he was nicknamed that because of his skill in morphology and grammar. ʿUqdah was pious, ascetic, and devout. He taught Ibn Hishām al-Khazzāz literature, so his father sent him dinars, but he returned them. He doubled them, but he returned them and said: "I did not return them because I considered them insignificant, but the boy asked me to teach him the Qurʾān, so teaching grammar became mixed with teaching the Qurʾān. I do not deem it lawful to take anything from him, even if he were to give me the whole world." As for his son Abū al-ʿAbbās, he heard much ḥadīth and was one of the greatest ḥuffāẓ. Among the major authorities who narrated from him were: Abū Bakr b. al-Jiʿābī, ʿAbd Allāh b. ʿAdī, al-Ṭabarānī, Ibn al-Muẓaffar, al-Dāraquṭnī, and Ibn Shāhīn. Al-Dāraquṭnī said: The people of al-Kūfah unanimously agree that no one with a better memory than his has been seen from the time of ʿAbd Allāh b. Masʿūd to the time of Abū al-ʿAbbās b. ʿUqdah. Abū al-ʿAbbās said: Al-Bardījī entered al-Kūfah and claimed that he had a better memory than I. I said: "Do not prolong this. Let us go to a bookseller's shop, set up the scales, and weigh as many books as you wish. Then they will be read to us, and we will recall them." So he remained silent. A certain Hāshimī man was sitting with Ibn ʿUqdah, and Ibn ʿUqdah said: "I can answer concerning three hundred thousand ḥadīths from the ḥadīth of the people of the house of [this man], apart from others." And [Ibn ʿUqdah] said on one occasion: "I have memorized, with chains and texts, arranged in order, two hundred and fifty thousand ḥadīths, and I can engage in study of [from] the chains, and some of the texts, the mursal reports, and the maqāṭīʿ, with six hundred thousand ḥadīths." Al-Dāraquṭnī said: Abū al-ʿAbbās b. ʿUqdah knew what people had, but they did not know what he had. Ibn al-Jawzī said: Despite this great memory and the abundance of what he heard and what was written from him, when he moved from one place to another his books amounted to six hundred loads. People criticized him for reasons. Ibn ʿAdī mentioned that he used to prepare copies for the shaykhs and order them to transmit them. Al-Dāraquṭnī said: Ibn ʿUqdah was an evil man. Abū ʿUmar b. Ḥayyawayh said: Ibn ʿUqdah used to [sit] in the mosque of Barāthā dictating the faults of the companions of the Messenger of Allah ﷺ — or he said: of the two shaykhs, meaning Abū Bakr and ʿUmar — so I abandoned his ḥadīth and do not transmit anything from him. The author said: Ibn ʿUqdah died in Dhū al-Qaʿdah of this year. 2467 - Al-Ḥasan b. Yūsuf b. Yaʿqūb b. Maymūn, Abū ʿAlī al-Ḥaddād: He narrated from Yūnus b. ʿAbd al-Aʿlā and others, and he was the imam of the ancient mosque of Miṣr. He died in Rabīʿ al-Ākhir of this year. 2468 - Sulaymān b. al-Ḥasan, Abū al-Qāsim: He served as vizier to al-Rāḍī, then al-Muttaqī li-llāh took power and kept him in his position. He died in Rajab of this year. 2469 - ʿAbd Allāh b. Aḥmad b. Isḥāq, Abū Muḥammad al-Jawharī al-Miṣrī: He resided in Baghdād at Nahr al-Dajāj and transmitted there from al-Rabīʿ b. Sulaymān al-Murādī and others. He was reliable; al-Dāraquṭnī, Ibn Shāhīn, and others narrated from him. The last to narrate from him was Abū ʿUmar b. Mahdī. He was reliable and trustworthy. He died in Rabīʿ al-Awwal of this year. 2470 - ʿAbd Allāh b. Muḥammad b. ʿUmar b. Aḥmad, Abū Bakr al-Bazzāz: He was the maternal uncle of Ibn al-Jiʿābī. Al-Dāraquṭnī and Ibn Shāhīn narrated from him. He died in Dhū al-Qaʿdah of this year. Among the notables who died in it: Aḥmad b. ʿĀmir b. Bishr b. Ḥāmid, Abū Ḥāmid al-Marwarūdhī An attribution to Marw al-Rūdh — and al-Rūdh means river — the Shāfiʿī jurist, student of al-Shaykh Abū Isḥāq al-Marwazī, an attribution to Marw al-Shāhijān, which is greater than that one. He commented on the "Mukhtaṣar of al-Muzanī" and had the book "Al-Jāmiʿ" in the school, and he wrote on the principles of jurisprudence. He was an imam whose dust could not be overtaken. He died in this year, may Allah Almighty have mercy on him. And Allah knows best.
