✧ Mention of the Caliphate of al-Mustakfī bi-llāh He is al-Mustakfī bi-llāh, Abū al-Qāsim ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Muktafī bi-llāh ʿAlī b. al-Muʿtaḍid bi-llāh Abī al-ʿAbbās Aḥmad b. Abī Aḥmad al-Muwaffaq b. al-Mutawakkil ʿalā Allāh. He and al-Muttaqī li-llāh share a common ancestor in al-Muʿtaḍid. When Tūzūn seized al-Muttaqī li-llāh, he had al-Mustakfī brought to him at al-Sanadiyya, and he and the general populace gave him the oath of allegiance. The reason for the oath of allegiance to him was what Abū al-ʿAbbās al-Tamīmī al-Rāzī, who was among Tūzūn's close associates, narrated. He said: I was the cause of the oath of allegiance to al-Mustakfī. That is because Ibrāhīm b. al-Zūbaynadār al-Daylamī invited me, so I went to him. He mentioned to me that he had married into a group, and that a woman among them said to him: 'This al-Muttaqī has shown enmity to you, and you have shown enmity to him. He has confronted you and his heart will not be sincere to you. Here is a man from the sons of the caliphs, from the progeny of al-Muktafī'—and she mentioned his intellect, his refinement, and his piety—'whom you can install as caliph. He will be your creature and your planting, and he will guide you to substantial funds that no one else knows about, and you will be relieved of fear and guarding.' He said: I knew that this matter would not be accomplished except through you, so I invited you for it. I said: 'I want [to] hear the woman's words.' So he brought her to me. I saw an intelligent, articulate woman, and she related something similar to me. I said: 'I must meet the man.' She said: 'Come back here tomorrow so that I may bring you together.' So I returned to her the next day, and I found that he had been taken out of the house of Ibn Ṭāhir in women's clothing. He made himself known to me and guaranteed the disclosure of eight hundred thousand dinars, of which one hundred thousand were for Tūzūn. He mentioned its aspects and addressed me with the speech of a man of understanding and intelligence, and I saw that he inclined toward Shiism. He said: So I went to Tūzūn and informed him, and my words found a place in his heart. He said: 'I want [to] see the man.' I said: 'You shall have that, but keep our matter secret from Ibn Shīrzād.' He said: 'I will.' And I returned to them and told them what was mentioned, and I promised them that Tūzūn would attend the next day. When it was the night of Sunday, the fourteenth of Ṣafar, I walked with Tūzūn in disguise, and we met with him. Tūzūn addressed him and gave him the oath of allegiance that night, and he kept the matter secret. When al-Muttaqī arrived, I said to Tūzūn when he met him: 'Are you still resolved on that?' He said: 'Yes.' I said: 'Then do it now, for if he enters the palace, his seizure will be difficult for you.' So he appointed agents over him and blinded him, and what happened happened. Al-Mustakfī was given the oath of allegiance as caliph on the day al-Muttaqī was deposed. Al-Muttaqī was brought, and he gave him the oath of allegiance and took from him the mantle and the staff. That woman became al-Mustakfī's housekeeper, and she called herself ʿAlam, and she gained control over all his affairs. Al-Mustakfī bi-llāh appointed Abū al-Faraj Muḥammad b. ʿAlī al-Sāmirrī as vizier on Wednesday, six nights remaining in Ṣafar, but he had nothing of the ministry except its name, and the one who managed affairs was Ibn Shīrzād. Al-Muttaqī was imprisoned. Al-Mustakfī bi-llāh bestowed upon Tūzūn a robe of honor and a crown. Al-Mustakfī bi-llāh sought Abū al-Qāsim al-Faḍl b. al-Muqtadir bi-llāh, who would later become caliph and be titled 'al-Muṭīʿ li-llāh', because he knew that he sought the caliphate. So he went into hiding throughout the caliphate of al-Mustakfī, and his house on the Tigris near the house of Ibn Ṭāhir was demolished until nothing remained of it.
