✧ Mention of the return of al-Muttaqī to Baghdādh, and the flight of al-Barīdī from it When Abū al-Ḥusayn al-Barīdī took control of Baghdādh, and his conduct was bad as we have mentioned, the hearts of the common people and the soldiers turned away from him. When Ibn Rāʾiq was killed, the army hastened to flee from al-Barīdī. Khajkhaj fled to al-Muttaqī—he had been appointed by al-Barīdī over al-Rādhānāt and its dependencies. Then Tūzūn, Nūshtakīn, and the Turks swore an oath together to fall upon Abū al-Ḥusayn al-Barīdī by surprise, but Nūshtakīn betrayed the plan and informed al-Barīdī of the news. So al-Barīdī took precautions and brought the Daylamites to his side. Tūzūn advanced against him, and the Daylamites fought him, and Tūzūn learned of Nūshtakīn's betrayal of him. So he turned back with a large group of Turks and marched toward al-Mawṣil on the fifth of Ramaḍān, and Ibn Ḥamdān was strengthened by them. He resolved to descend upon Baghdādh, and he prepared and descended, he and al-Muttaqī. He appointed over the tax and estate affairs in Diyār Muḍar—which are al-Ruhā, Ḥarrān, and al-Raqqah—Abū al-Ḥasan ʿAlī b. Ṭiyyāb, and sent him from al-Mawṣil. Over Diyār Muḍar was Abū al-Ḥusayn Aḥmad b. ʿAlī b. Muqātil, as deputy for Ibn Rāʾiq. They fought, and Abū al-Ḥusayn b. Muqātil was killed, and Ibn Ṭiyyāb took control of it. When al-Muttaqī li-llāh and Nāṣir al-Dawlah b. Ḥamdān approached Baghdādh, Abū al-Ḥusayn fled from it to Wāsiṭ, and the common people in Baghdādh were thrown into disorder, and people plundered one another. Abū al-Ḥusayn's stay in Baghdādh had lasted three months and twenty days. Al-Muttaqī li-llāh entered Baghdādh, and with him were the Banū Ḥamdān with many armies. Al-Muttaqī appointed Abū Isḥāq al-Qarārīṭī as vizier, and he entrusted Tūzūn with the police of both sides of Baghdādh, and that was in Shawwāl.
