✧ Mention of the war between Ibn Ḥamdān and al-Barīdī When Abū al-Ḥusayn al-Barīdī fled to Wāsiṭ, and the Banū Ḥamdān and al-Muttaqī reached Baghdādh, the Banū Ḥamdān left Baghdādh toward Wāsiṭ. Abū al-Ḥusayn had marched from Wāsiṭ against them at Baghdādh. Nāṣir al-Dawla encamped at al-Madāʾin, and sent his brother Sayf al-Dawla and his cousin Abū ʿAbd Allāh al-Ḥusayn b. Saʿīd b. Ḥamdān with the army to fight Abū al-Ḥusayn. They met near al-Madāʾin at two farsakhs, and fought for several days, the last of which was the fourth of Dhu al-Ḥijja. Tūzūn, Khajkhaj, and the Turks were with Ibn Ḥamdān. Sayf al-Dawla and those with him were defeated and fled to al-Madāʾin, where Nāṣir al-Dawla was. He turned them back and added to them those of the army he had, so they returned to battle. Abū al-Ḥusayn al-Barīdī was defeated, a group of the notables of his companions were taken prisoner, and a group were killed. Abū al-Ḥusayn al-Barīdī returned defeated to Wāsiṭ, and Sayf al-Dawla was unable to pursue him there because of the weakness and wounds among his companions. Al-Muttaqī had sent his family from Baghdādh to Surra man raʾā, then brought them back. The notables of the people had fled from Baghdādh, and when al-Barīdī was defeated they returned to it. Nāṣir al-Dawla b. Ḥamdān returned to Baghdādh and entered it on the thirteenth of Dhu al-Ḥijja, with the prisoners before him on camels. When Sayf al-Dawla and his companions had rested, they went down from the place of the battle to Wāsiṭ. They saw that the Barīdīs had gone down to al-Baṣra, so he stayed at Wāsiṭ with the army. We shall mention his news in the year thirty-one [and three hundred]. When Nāṣir al-Dawla returned to Baghdādh, he examined the standard of the coinage and found it deficient. He ordered the dinars to be corrected, and struck dinars he called al-ibrīziyya, whose standard was better than others. The dinar was at ten dirhams, and this dinar was sold for thirteen dirhams.
