Translation
✧ Mention of what al-Barīdī did in Baghdād When he took control of Baghdād, his followers began plundering and robbing and seizing mounts, and they made seeking those a way to other things of household goods; houses were raided, their inhabitants driven out and they were occupied, and the matter became grave. A tax of five dinars was imposed on every kurr of wheat and barley and all kinds of grains, and prices rose high: a kurr of wheat was sold for three hundred and sixteen dinars, and khushkawār bread, two raṭls for two qīrāṭs of sound amīrī weight. The protected people were debased, and the strong seized the weak. Five hundred kurrs of wheat and barley arrived from al-Kūfah and its rural districts, and he took all of it, claiming that it belonged to the governor of that region. Dissensions occurred among the people. Among that was that he had with him a group of Qarāmiṭah, and war broke out between them and the Turks in which a number were killed, and the Qarāmiṭah were defeated and left Baghdād. War also broke out between the Daylam and the common people, in which a number were killed from the boundary of Nahr Ṭābaq to the New Bridge. At the end of Shaʿbān, the affliction upon the people increased: their homes were raided night and day, and most of the tax collectors went into hiding because of the great demands made upon them for what was not in the rural districts. The people dispersed, and the people and the sultan's followers went out to the vicinity of Baghdād, harvested what wheat and barley had ripened, and carried it with its ears to their homes. Along with that, he plundered and oppressed the people of Iraq and wronged them with a wrong the like of which had never been heard. And God is the one whose help is sought. (We have mentioned this section only so that the unjust may know that their reports are transmitted and remain throughout time; perhaps they will abandon injustice for this reason, if they do not abandon it for God, glorified and exalted be He.)
