✧ Mention of Ibn Rāʾiq's return to Baghdādh In this year, (Abū Bakr) Muḥammad b. Rāʾiq returned from Syria to Baghdādh and became Amīr al-Umarāʾ. The reason for that was that when the Bujkamī Turks marched to Mosul, they did not find with Ibn Ḥamdān what they wanted, so they marched toward Syria to Ibn Rāʾiq. Among their commanders were Tūzūn, Khajkhaj, Nūshtikīn, and Ṣīghūn. When they reached him, they made him covet returning to Iraq. Then letters from al-Muttaqī reached him summoning him, so he marched from Damascus on the twentieth of Ramaḍān, having appointed as his deputy over Syria Abū al-Ḥasan Aḥmad b. ʿAlī b. Muqātil. When he reached Mosul, Nāṣir al-Dawlah b. Ḥamdān moved aside from his path, and they exchanged messages and agreed to make peace. Ibn Ḥamdān delivered to him one hundred thousand dinars, and Ibn Rāʾiq marched to Baghdādh. Kūratikīn seized the vizier al-Qarārīṭī, and appointed as vizier Abū Jaʿfar Muḥammad b. al-Qāsim al-Karkhī in Dhū al-Qaʿdah. Al-Qarārīṭī's vizierate had lasted forty-three days. News of Ibn Rāʾiq reached Abū ʿAbd Allāh al-Barīdī, so he sent his brothers to Wāsiṭ. They entered it, expelled the Daylamites from it, and gave the khuṭbah for him in Wāsiṭ. Kūratikīn went out from Baghdādh to ʿUkbarā, and Ibn Rāʾiq reached him. War broke out between them and continued for several days. On Thursday night, nine nights remaining in Dhū al-Ḥijjah, Ibn Rāʾiq marched by night from ʿUkbarā with his army, and by morning he was at Baghdādh. He entered it from the western side with all his army, and alighted in al-Najmī. The next day he crossed over to the caliph and met him. Al-Muttaqī li-llāh rode with him on the Tigris, then returned. On that day, after the afternoon prayer, Kūratikīn arrived with all his army from the eastern side. They used to mock Ibn Rāʾiq's companions, saying: "Where has this caravan coming from Syria alighted?" They alighted on the eastern side. When Kūratikīn entered Baghdādh, Ibn Rāʾiq despaired of governing it, so he ordered that his baggage be loaded and that he return to Syria. The people loaded their baggage. Then he resolved to engage them in some fighting before his departure. He ordered a group of his army to cross the Tigris and come upon the Turks from behind them. Then he rode in a sumayriyyah, and a number of his companions rode with him in twenty sumayriyyahs. They stood shooting arrows at the Turks, and his companions arrived and shouted from behind them. The common people gathered with Ibn Rāʾiq's companions, making a clamor. Kūratikīn thought that the army had come upon him from behind and from in front, so he and his companions fled, and he hid himself. The common people stoned them with baked bricks and other things. Ibn Rāʾiq's position was strengthened. He took those Daylamites who sought his protection and killed them to the last man. They were about four hundred, and none of them escaped except one man who hid among the slain and was carried with them in sacks and thrown into the Tigris, but he survived and lived for a long time thereafter. The captives among the Daylamite commanders, about a dozen men, were killed. Al-Muttaqī bestowed a robe of honor on Ibn Rāʾiq and made him Amīr al-Umarāʾ. He ordered Jaʿfar al-Karkhī to keep to his house. His vizierate had lasted thirty-three days. Aḥmad al-Kūfī took charge of affairs and administered them. Then Ibn Rāʾiq captured Kūratikīn and imprisoned him in the caliph's palace.
