Translation

✧ Ibn al-Jawzī said: The two Tishrīns and the two Kānūns of this year passed without any rain falling on Baghdād except for a single shower from which no waterspout flowed. Prices rose in Baghdād until a kurr was sold for one hundred and thirty dinars. Death spread among the people to the extent that groups were buried in a single grave without washing or funeral prayer. Real estate and furnishings were sold at the cheapest prices, and what had been worth a dinar was bought for a dirham. A woman saw the Messenger of God ﷺ in her dream, commanding her that the people should go out to the open desert for the rain prayer. The caliph ordered compliance with that, so the people prayed and sought rain, and the rains came, increasing the Euphrates by an amount the like of which had not been seen. Al-ʿAbbāsiyya was flooded, the water entered the streets of Baghdād, and the old and new bridges collapsed. The Kurds cut off the road from a caravan from Khurāsān, taking from them what was worth three thousand dinars, most of that being from the wealth of Bajkam al-Turkī. The Euphrates increased by an unprecedented rise, al-ʿAbbāsiyya was flooded, and the water entered the streets of Baghdād, causing the old and new bridges to collapse.
