✧ Mention of the Barīdīs’ ascent to Baghdād When Bujkum was killed, the Daylamites gathered around Balsawāz b. Mālik b. Musāfir, and the Turks killed him, so the Daylamites descended to Abū ʿAbd Allāh al-Barīdī. They were elite troops with no riffraff among them, and through them he grew strong and his power became great. They ascended from al-Baṣrah to Wāsiṭ in Shaʿbān, and al-Muttaqī lillāh sent to them ordering them not to ascend. They said, “We are in need of money. If some of it is sent to us, we will not ascend.” So he sent them one hundred and fifty thousand dinars. The Turks said to al-Muttaqī, “We will fight the Banū al-Barīdī, so release money to us and appoint a commander over us.” He spent money on them and on the veteran soldiers of Baghdād—four hundred thousand dinars from the money that had been taken for Bujkum—and placed Salāmah al-Ṭūlūnī over them. They went out with al-Muttaqī lillāh to the Diyālī river on Friday, eight nights remaining of Shaʿbān. Al-Barīdī marched from Wāsiṭ to Baghdād and did not abide by what had been settled with him. When he drew near Baghdād, the Bujkumī Turks fell into disagreement; some of them sought safe-conduct from al-Barīdī, and some of them went to al-Mawṣil. Salāmah al-Ṭūlūnī and Abū ʿAbd Allāh al-Kūfī went into hiding. The caliph had no recourse but to spend money—they being the possessors of favors and wealth—by moving out of Baghdād out of fear of al-Barīdī, his injustice, and his recklessness. Abū ʿAbd Allāh al-Barīdī entered Baghdād on the twelfth of Ramaḍān and encamped at al-Shafīʿī. The vizier Abū al-Ḥusayn, the judges, the secretaries, and the notables of the people met him. With him was an uncountable multitude of ships of all kinds. Al-Muttaqī sent to him to congratulate him on his safety, and sent him food and other things for several nights. He was addressed as vizier, and likewise Abū al-Ḥusayn b. Maymūn, the caliph’s vizier, was also addressed as vizier. Then Abū al-Ḥusayn was dismissed. The duration of Abū al-Ḥusayn’s vizierate was thirty-three days. Then Abū ʿAbd Allāh al-Barīdī arrested Abū al-Ḥusayn and sent him to al-Baṣrah, where he imprisoned him until he died—in Ṣafar of the year three hundred and thirty, of an acute fever. Then al-Barīdī sent to al-Muttaqī demanding five hundred thousand dinars to distribute among the troops, but he refused him. So he sent to him threatening him and reminding him of what had befallen al-Muʿtazz, al-Mustaʿīn, and al-Muhtadī. Messengers went back and forth, and he sent him the full five hundred thousand dinars. Al-Barīdī did not meet al-Muttaqī lillāh for the duration of his stay in Baghdād.
