✧ Mention of the killing of Bajkam In this year Bajkam was killed. The reason for his killing was that Abū ʿAbd Allāh al-Barīdī dispatched an army from al-Baṣrah to Madhār, so Bajkam sent an army against them under Tūzūn. They fought a fierce battle which at first went against Tūzūn, so he wrote to Bajkam asking him to join him. Bajkam marched to them from Wāsiṭ in the middle of Rajab. He then received Tūzūn's letter stating that he had defeated them and put them to flight. He wanted to return to Wāsiṭ, but one of his companions advised him to go hunting, so he accepted that and went hunting until he reached the Nahr Jūr. He heard that there were Kurds there who had wealth and riches, and his soul became greedy (for taking it). He headed toward them with only a few of his companions, without any armor to protect him. The Kurds fled before him, and he shot at one of them but missed, then shot at another and also missed, although his arrows never failed. Then a Kurdish boy came at him from behind and stabbed him in his side while he did not recognize him, killing him. That was on the 24th of Rajab. His army became divided: the Daylamites in particular went over to al-Barīdī, and they numbered one thousand five hundred. He treated them well, doubled their stipends, and delivered them in a single payment. Al-Barīdī had already resolved to flee from al-Baṣrah, he and his brothers. Bajkam had corresponded with the people of al-Baṣrah and won their hearts, so they inclined to him. Thus relief came to the Barīdīs from where they did not expect. Bajkam's Turks returned to Wāsiṭ, where Takīnak was imprisoned—Bajkam had imprisoned him—and they brought him out of his prison. He marched with them to Baghdād, and they proclaimed obedience to al-Muttaqī lillāh. Abū al-Ḥusayn Aḥmad b. Maymūn took charge of affairs, and al-Muttaqī seized Bajkam's residence, taking his wealth from it. He had buried much wealth there, and likewise in the desert, because he feared that if he were to perish, his wealth would not be reached in his house. The amount taken from his wealth and buried treasures was one million two hundred thousand dinars. The duration of Bajkam's emirate was two years, eight months, and nine days.
