Translation

✧ The mention of the killing of Mākān b. Kālī, and the seizure of al-Rayy by Abū ʿAlī b. Muḥtāj We have already mentioned the march of Abū ʿAlī b. Muḥammad b. al-Muẓaffar b. Muḥtāj to Jurjān, and his expulsion of Mākān from it. When Mākān departed from it, he headed for Ṭabaristān and stayed there, while Abū ʿAlī remained in Jurjān setting its affairs in order. Then he appointed Ibrāhīm b. Sīmjūr al-Dawātī as his deputy over it, and marched toward al-Rayy in al-Muḥarram of this year, reaching it in Rabīʿ al-Awwal. There was Washmakīr b. Ziyār, the brother of Mardāwīj. ʿImād al-Dawla and Rukn al-Dawla, the two sons of Buwayh, had been writing to Abū ʿAlī, urging him to aim for Washmakīr and promising him assistance. Their intention was that al-Rayy should be taken from Washmakīr; and when Abū ʿAlī took it, he would not be able to stay there because of the extent of his governorship in Khurāsān, so they would gain control of it. News of their agreement reached Washmakīr. He wrote to Mākān b. Kālī, seeking to employ him and informing him of the situation. So Mākān b. Kālī marched from Ṭabaristān to al-Rayy, and Abū ʿAlī marched and the army of Rukn al-Dawla b. Buwayh came to him, and they gathered with him at Isḥāqābādh. They and Washmakīr met, and Mākān b. Kālī took his stand in the center and engaged in the fighting personally. Abū ʿAlī arranged his companions in squadrons, and commanded those facing the center to press them hard in combat, then to feign retreat before them and draw them out. Then he instructed those facing the right wing and the left wing to skirmish with them just enough to keep them occupied from helping those in the center, without engaging them in a decisive battle. They did that. His companions pressed hard upon the center of Washmakīr in battle, then feigned retreat before them. So Mākān and those with him became eager against them, pursued them, and left their positions. At that moment Abū ʿAlī ordered the squadrons facing the right wing and the left wing that some of them should advance and come upon those in the center of Washmakīr from behind them. They did that. When Abū ʿAlī saw that his companions had come from behind Mākān and those with him of his companions, he ordered those who had feigned retreat to turn back and charge against Mākān and his companions. Their spirits had been strengthened by their companions, so they turned back and charged against those, and the sword took them from before them and from behind them, and they turned in flight. When Mākān saw that, he dismounted and fought excellently, displaying a courage the like of which people had not seen. Then a stray arrow came to him and struck him in the forehead, penetrating the helmet and the head until it emerged from the back of his neck, and he fell dead. Washmakīr and those who survived with him fled to Ṭabaristān, and he stayed there. Abū ʿAlī gained control of al-Rayy, and sent the head of Mākān to Bukhārā with the arrow still in it. It was not carried to Baghdād until Bujkum was killed; because Bujkum had been one of his companions, and he sat in mourning when he was killed. When Bujkum was killed, the head was carried from Bukhārā to Baghdād with the arrow still in it and in the helmet. Abū ʿAlī also sent the captives to Bukhārā, and they remained there until Washmakīr entered into obedience to the house of Sāmān and went to Khurāsān and asked for them as a gift; they were released to him, as we shall mention in the year 330.
