Translation
✧ Mention of the Caliphate of al-Muttaqī li-llāh When al-Rāḍī bi-llāh died, the matter of the caliphate remained suspended, awaiting the arrival of Abū ʿAbd Allāh al-Kūfī, the secretary of Bajkam, from Wāsiṭ, where Bajkam was. Guard was placed over the caliphal palace. Then a letter from Bajkam arrived with al-Kūfī, instructing that everyone who had held the vizierate, the heads of the dīwāns, the ʿAlids, the judges, the ʿAbbāsids, and the notables of the city should gather with Abū al-Qāsim Sulaymān b. al-Ḥasan, the vizier of al-Rāḍī, and that al-Kūfī should consult them regarding who should be installed as caliph from among those whose doctrine and conduct they approved. Al-Kūfī gathered them and consulted them. Some of them mentioned Ibrāhīm b. al-Muqtadir, and they dispersed on that basis. The next day, the people agreed upon him. He was brought to the caliphal palace and given the oath of allegiance on the twentieth of Rabīʿ al-Awwal. Titles were presented to him, and he chose "al-Muttaqī li-llāh." The people all swore allegiance to him, and robes of honour and the banner were sent to Bajkam in Wāsiṭ. After the death of al-Rāḍī and before the accession of al-Muttaqī, Bajkam had sent to the caliphal palace and taken furnishings and equipment that he admired. He made Salāma al-Ṭūlūnī his chamberlain and confirmed Sulaymān in his vizierate, though he had nothing of the vizierate but its name, as all direction of affairs was in the hands of al-Kūfī, Bajkam's secretary.
