Translation
✧ Then the year 329 AH began. Mention of the death of al-Rāḍī bi-llāh ﷺ: In this year al-Rāḍī bi-llāh Abū al-ʿAbbās Aḥmad b. al-Muqtadir died in the middle of Rabīʿ al-Awwal. His caliphate was six years (and ten months) and ten days. His age was thirty-two years and some months. His illness was dropsy. He was a man of letters and a poet. Among his poetry: My face grows pale when my eye beholds it, and his face reddens with shame, until it seems that what is in his cheek has been transferred to it from the blood of my body. He also has a poem mourning his father al-Muqtadir: If a living creature could be a grave for a dead one, I would make my entrails a grave for his bones. If my lifespan were subject to my will and destiny aided me, I would share my life with him. By my soul, O soil in whose dust I have embraced decay, you have enfolded the rain, the lion, and the full moon. Among his poetry also: Every purity leads to trouble, every security to caution. The end of youth is death therein or trouble. How excellent is grey hair as a warner who admonishes humankind. O hopeful one who has wandered astray in the abyss of peril, where are those who were before us? The eye and the trace have been effaced. The return will bring back one whose entire life is danger. O Lord, I have stored up with You a hope I treasure. I believe in what is between the revelation in the sūrahs, and my acknowledgment of forsaking my benefit and preferring harm. O Lord, forgive me the sin, O best of those who forgive. Al-Rāḍī was also generous, open-handed, loving to converse with men of letters and virtuous people and to sit with them. When he died, Bujkam summoned his boon companions and sitting companions, hoping to benefit from them, but he did not understand from them what would benefit him. Among them was Sinān b. Thābit al-Ṣābiʾ, the physician. He summoned him and complained to him of the domination of irascible power over him, and he disliked it. He continued with him in making that repugnant to him and making the opposite of it—forbearance, pardon, and justice—attractive. He worked with him until most of what he felt disappeared, and he refrained from killing and punishments. Al-Rāḍī was brown-skinned, with large eyes, and light beard. His mother was an umm walad named Ẓalūm.
