✧ Mention of the notables who died in this year: 2407 - Isḥāq b. Muḥammad b. Isḥāq, Abū ʿĪsā al-Nāqid: He narrated from al-Ḥasan b. ʿArafa, and he died in Muḥarram of this year. 2408 - Jaʿfar al-Murtaʿish, Abū Muḥammad: Thus did Abū Bakr al-Khaṭīb mention him, and Abū ʿAbd al-Raḥmān al-Sulamī said: His name is ʿAbd Allāh b. Muḥammad Abū Muḥammad al-Naysābūrī. He was among the wealthy, then he renounced that wealth and accompanied the poor, such as al-Junayd, Abū Ḥafṣ, and Abū ʿUthmān. He resided in Baghdad until he became the shaykh of the Sufis. His residence was in al-Shūnīziyya. They used to say: The wonders of Baghdad are three: the allusions of al-Shiblī, the witty remarks of al-Murtaʿish, and the tales of Jaʿfar al-Khawāṣṣ. Abū al-Faraj al-Ṣāʾigh said: Al-Murtaʿish said: Whoever thinks that his actions will save him from the Fire and bring him to [divine good pleasure] has made his own self and his actions a matter of peril, but whoever relies upon the bounty of God, God will bring him to the furthest stations of divine good pleasure. It was said to him: So-and-so walks on water. He said: Indeed, the one whom God enables to oppose his own desire is greater than walking on water. From Muḥammad b. Maʾmūn al-Balkhī, that he heard Abū ʿAbd Allāh al-Razzāz say: I was present at the death of al-Murtaʿish in the mosque of al-Shūnīziyya in the year 328. He said: "Look into my debts." They looked and said: "Some ten-odd dirhams." He said: "Look at my rags." When they were brought near him, he said: "Put them toward my debts, and I hope that God will give me the shroud." Then he said: "I asked [God for three things at my death, and He granted them to me: I asked Him to let me die in poverty; I asked Him] to make my death in this mosque, for I have accompanied in it people; and I asked Him that around me be those whose company I find congenial and whom I love." Then he closed his eyes and died after an hour, God's mercy be upon him. 2409 - Al-Ḥasan b. Aḥmad b. Yazīd b. ʿĪsā b. al-Faḍl b. Bashshār, Abū Saʿīd, known as al-Iṣṭakhrī: The judge of Qumm. He accompanied al-Junayd and Sahl b. ʿAbd Allāh, and he resided in Makkah as a mujāwir until he died there in this year. Abū ʿAbd Allāh b. Khufayf said: I heard Abū al-Ḥasan al-Muzayyin in Makkah say: I was in the desert of Tabūk, and I went forward to a well to draw water from it. My foot slipped and I fell into the depths of the well. I saw in the depths of the well a wide corner, so I made a place suitable and sat upon it, and I said: If anything happens to me, I will not spoil [the water] for the people. My soul became content and my heart became still. While I was sitting, there was a rustling sound. I looked closely, and there was a viper descending upon me. I reviewed my state, and found it still [upon me]. It descended and coiled around me while I was calm of heart, [my soul] not agitated by it. Then it wrapped its tail and brought me out of the well, and released its tail from me. I do not know whether the earth swallowed it or the sky raised it. Then I arose and walked away. There is another called: 2421 - Abū Jaʿfar al-Muzayyin al-Kabīr: He was in Makkah and died there, and he was among the devoted worshippers. Jaʿfar al-Khuldī said: In one of my pilgrimages I bade farewell to al-Muzayyin al-Kabīr, and I said: "Give me a provision." He said: "If you lose something or you want God to bring you together with a person, say: 'O Gatherer of mankind for a day about which there is no doubt, indeed God does not fail in His promise, gather me with [such-and-such], for God will gather you with' that person or that thing." He said: So I came to al-Kattānī and bade him farewell, and I said: "Give me a provision." He gave me a bezel with an inscription on it like a talisman, and said: "When you are distressed, look at this, and your distress will depart." He said: I departed, and I did not call upon [God] with that supplication but that it was answered for me, nor did I see the bezel when I was distressed but that my distress departed. Then one day I set out to cross to the eastern side of Baghdad, and a great wind arose while I was in the sumayriyya boat, and the bezel was in my pocket. I took it out to look at it, and I do not know how it went from me, into the water or into the boat, and I was greatly distressed. I made the supplication and crossed, and I did not cease supplicating with it day and night for days. Then after that I took out a chest containing my clothes to change something from them, and I emptied the chest, and there was the bezel at the bottom of the chest. I took it and praised God, mighty and majestic, for its return. 2422 - ʿUmar b. Abī ʿUmar Muḥammad b. Yūsuf b. Yaʿqūb b. Ismāʿīl b. Ḥammād b. Zayd b. Dirham, Abū al-Ḥusayn al-Azdī: He deputized for his father in judgeship when he was twenty years old. Then his father died while he was in the judgeship. He was a memorizer of the Qurʾān and of fiqh according to the school of Mālik, of the laws of inheritance, arithmetic, language, grammar, poetry, and ḥadīth. He was confirmed in the judgeship, then he was made chief judge for the rest of his life. He compiled a musnad, and he was endowed with strength of understanding, excellence of natural talent, and nobility of character. Abū al-Qāsim b. Burhān al-Naḥwī said: The number of witnesses in the time of the chief judge Abū al-Ḥusayn b. the chief judge Abū ʿUmar was one thousand eight hundred witnesses, none of whom testified except with pure merit in religion, knowledge, wealth, or nobility. Ismāʿīl b. Saʿīd al-Muʿaddil said: Abū ʿUmar al-Qāḍī used to say: I was constantly terrified of a question coming to me from the sultan until my son Abū al-Ḥusayn grew up. From Muḥammad b. ʿUbayd Allāh al-Naṣībī, that Jaʿfar b. Warqāʾ narrated to them, saying: I returned from the pilgrimage, I and my brother, and the judge Abū ʿUmar and his son Abū al-Ḥusayn were late in congratulating me, so I wrote to them: Should I deem Abū ʿUmar negligent, and complain, and deem his youth Abū al-Ḥusayn negligent? By what case and by what judgment Have they persisted in cutting off two who maintain ties? For they neither came nor sent an excuse, Nor were they bound to my right. If we refrain and do not reproach, their estrangement will continue Toward the most sincere of sincere ones. And if we reproach, it is a right, but we Hold the two judges above reproach. The verses reached Abū ʿUmar while he was occupied, so he sent them to Abū al-Ḥusayn and ordered him to answer them. He wrote to me: Be willful and unjust, for I will not depart from pure affection, O unjust one. You thought of me a coldness for which you reproached, and you imagined that I am cutting your rope. You judged by conjecture and doubts, but one does not judge by conjecture, while passion is the judge. You neglected the right of farewell and came seeking the visitation of the arrival. Two matters that did not escape a keen one, and you are knowledgeable in judging them: And all this is the speech of one trustworthy, whose heart is sound from your coldness. Al-Muʿāfā b. Zakariyyā said: I used to attend the session of Abū al-Ḥusayn b. Abī ʿUmar on the day of judicial review. One day I attended with a group of the people of knowledge in the place where it was customary for us to sit, waiting for him to come out. He said: A bedouin entered, perhaps he had a need of him, and sat near us. A crow came and perched on a palm tree in the courtyard and cawed, then flew away. The bedouin said: This crow says that the master of this house will die after seven days. He said: We shouted at him and rebuked him, so he arose and left. The coming out of Abū al-Ḥusayn was delayed, and then a servant came out to us and said: The judge summons you. He said: We arose and entered upon him, and behold he was changed in color, low in spirits, and distressed. He said: Know that I shall tell you something that has occupied my heart: Last night I saw in a dream a figure saying: The dwellings of the family of Ḥammād b. Zayd, upon your people and the blessings be peace. And my breast has become constricted because of that. He said: We supplicated for him and departed. When the seventh day from that day came, he was buried, God have mercy on him. Ṭalḥa b. Muḥammad b. Jaʿfar said: The chief judge—meaning Abū al-Ḥusayn ʿUmar b. Muḥammad b. Yūsuf—died on Thursday, thirteen nights remaining of Shaʿbān in the year 328. His son Abū Naṣr prayed over him, and he was buried beside Abū ʿUmar in a house next to his house. Abū Bakr al-Ṣūlī said: This judge ʿUmar b. Muḥammad had attained a great attainment in the sciences, and he had read with those who wrote down language and historical reports nearly ten thousand folios. He died at the age of thirty-seven. Al-Rāḍī grieved for him with intense grief, so much so that he wept in our presence, and said: I used to be distressed by something and he would make it easy for me, and he used to say: May I not remain after him. 2423 - ʿUthmān b. ʿAbdaweyh, Abū ʿAmr al-Bazzāz al-Kashshī: He heard Ibrāhīm al-Ḥarbī. From him narrated Abū Bakr [b. Abī Mūsā al-Qāḍī, and he was trustworthy. He died in Ramaḍān of this year]. 2424 - Muḥammad b. Aḥmad b. Ayyūb b. al-Ṣalt, Abū al-Ḥasan al-Muqriʾ, known as Ibn Shanabūdh: He narrated from Abū Muslim al-Kajjī, Bishr b. Mūsā, and many people of Syria and Egypt. He had selected for himself readings from the anomalous recitations and recited them. Abū Bakr and others composed books in refutation of him. Ismāʿīl b. ʿAlī al-Khuṭabī said: The affair of a man known as Ibn Shanabūdh became notorious in Baghdad. He taught people to recite and recited in the miḥrāb with readings that contradicted the codices, from what is transmitted from Ibn Masʿūd, Ubayy, and others, which had been recited before the collection of the codex that ʿUthmān compiled. He followed the anomalous readings [and recited them] and argued, until his affair became great and offensive, and the people denounced him. So the sultan sent and he was seized on Saturday, [six nights having passed] of Rabīʿ al-Ākhir in the year 323, and he was carried to the house of the vizier Muḥammad b. ʿAlī b. Muqla. The judges, jurists, and reciters were brought, and the vizier debated with him in their presence. He persisted in what was reported of him and defended it. The vizier sought to make him descend from that, but he refused to descend from it or to retract what he recited of these objectionable anomalous readings that added to the codex and contradicted it. All those present in the session denounced that, and they advised punishing him and treating him in a way that would compel him to retract. So he was ordered to be stripped and made to stand between the two posts of the whip, and to be struck with the dirra on the back of his neck. He was struck about ten strokes of the dirra with a severe beating, and he could not endure it; he cried for help and submitted to retraction and repentance. So he was released, his clothes were returned to him, and he was asked to repent. A document of his repentance was written for him, and his signature of repentance was taken from him. Ibn Shanabūdh died on Monday, three nights having passed of Ṣafar of this year. In it also died Muḥammad b. Yaʿqūb Abū Jaʿfar al-Kulaynī, who was one of the imams of the Imāmīs and their scholars. (Al-Kulaynī: with the dotted yāʾ with two dots below, then nūn, and it is pronounced with imāla). In it also died Abū ʿAbd Allāh al-Qummī, the vizier of Rukn al-Dawla b. Buwayh, so he appointed after him Abū al-Faḍl b. al-ʿAmīd as vizier, and he gained control over him, and obtained what none of the viziers of the Buwayhids had obtained. Of his reports will come what will make known his station. The author of the book "Al-ʿIqd al-Farīd," Aḥmad b. ʿAbd Rabbih b. Ḥabīb b. Ḥudayr b. Sālim, Abū ʿUmar al-Qurṭubī. the freedman of Hishām b. ʿAbd al-Raḥmān b. Muʿāwiyah b. Hishām b. ʿAbd al-Malik b. Marwān b. al-Ḥakam al-Umawī. He was among the most virtuous and prolific scholars and was knowledgeable in the reports of the ancients and the later generations. His book al-ʿIqd demonstrates abundant merits and much important knowledge, but much of his speech indicates Shīʿism in him and an inclination to disparage the Banū Umayyah. This is strange from him because he was one of their freedmen. It would have been more fitting for him to be among those loyal to them, not among those hostile to them. Al-Qāḍī Ibn Khallikān said: He has a collection of fine poetry. Then he cited from it verses of amorous poetry about beardless youths and women as well. He was born in Ramaḍān of the year 246 AH, and he died in Cordoba on Sunday, the eighteenth of Jumādā al-Ūlā of this year. Umm ʿĪsā bt. Ibrāhīm al-Ḥarbī She was a learned and virtuous woman who issued legal rulings in fiqh. She died in Rajab of this year and was buried beside her father, may God Almighty have mercy on them both.
