✧ Mention of Ibn Rāʾiq's seizure of Syria In this year, Ibn Rāʾiq seized Syria, and we have mentioned his march previously. When he entered Syria, he headed for the city of Ḥimṣ and took possession of it. Then he marched to Damascus, where Badr b. ʿAbd Allāh al-Ikhshīdī, known as Budayr, was governor for al-Ikhshīd. Ibn Rāʾiq expelled him from it and took possession of it, and marched from there to al-Ramlah and took possession of it. He then marched to the ʿArīsh of Egypt, seeking the Egyptian lands. Al-Ikhshīd Muḥammad b. Ṭughj met him and fought him, and al-Ikhshīd was defeated. Ibn Rāʾiq's men occupied themselves with plundering and alighted in the tents of al-Ikhshīd's men. An ambush laid by al-Ikhshīd came out against them, fell upon them, defeated them, and scattered them. Ibn Rāʾiq escaped with seventy men and reached Damascus in the ugliest state. Al-Ikhshīd sent his brother Abū Naṣr b. Ṭughj against him with a numerous army. When Ibn Rāʾiq heard of them, he marched against them from Damascus, and they met at al-Lujūn on the fourth of Dhū al-Ḥijjah. Abū Naṣr's army was defeated and he was killed. Ibn Rāʾiq took him, shrouded him, and carried him to his brother al-Ikhshīd, while he was in Egypt. He sent with him his son Muzāḥim b. Muḥammad b. Rāʾiq, and wrote to al-Ikhshīd a letter condoling him for his brother, apologizing for what had happened, and swearing that he had not intended to kill him, and that he had sent his son so that he might ransom him with him if he wished that. Al-Ikhshīd received Muzāḥim kindly, bestowed a robe of honor upon him, and returned him to his father. They made peace on the condition that al-Ramlah and what lies beyond it toward Egypt should belong to al-Ikhshīd, and the rest of Syria to Muḥammad b. Rāʾiq. Al-Ikhshīd was to pay him for al-Ramlah every year one hundred and forty thousand dinars.
