Translation

✧ Mention of Bujkam's seizure of Wāsiṭ When Bujkam returned to Baghdādh, he prepared to go down to Wāsiṭ and guarded the roads lest his news reach al-Barīdī and he take precautions. He descended by water on the twentieth of Dhū al-Qaʿda and dispatched his army by land. He removed al-Barīdī's name from the vizierate and appointed in his place Abū al-Qāsim Sulaymān b. al-Ḥasan b. Mukhallad. Al-Barīdī's vizierate had lasted one year, four months, and fourteen days. Ibn Shīrzād was arrested because he had been the cause of his connection with al-Barīdī, and a hundred and fifty thousand dinars were taken from him. By a strange coincidence, Bujkam had a secretary in charge of his household and retinue who was with him in the boat when he descended to Wāsiṭ. A bird came and perched on the prow of the boat. It was caught and brought before Bujkam. On its tail was found a letter, which he opened. It was from this secretary to a brother of his with al-Barīdī, informing him of Bujkam's news and what he intended. He threw the letter to him, and the secretary confessed, since he could not deny it as it was in his own handwriting. Bujkam ordered him killed, and he was killed and thrown into the water. When news of Bujkam reached al-Barīdī, he departed from Wāsiṭ to al-Baṣra without staying there. When Bujkam arrived, he found no one there and took control of it. Bujkam had left an army in the region of al-Jabal, intending the Daylam and the Jīl, but they were defeated and returned to Baghdādh.
