Translation

✧ Then the Year 328 AH Began Mention of Abū ʿAlī’s seizure of Jurjān In this year, in Muḥarram, Abū ʿAlī b. Muḥtāj marched with the army of Khurāsān from Naysābūr to Jurjān. In Jurjān was Mākān b. Kālī, who had renounced obedience to the amīr Naṣr b. Aḥmad. Abū ʿAlī found that they had destroyed the wells, so he turned aside from the road to another, and they were unaware of him until he encamped one farsakh from Jurjān. He besieged Mākān there, pressed him hard, and cut off provisions from the town. Many of Mākān’s companions sought safety with him, and the situation of those who remained in Jurjān became so dire that a man would limit himself each day to a handful of sesame, or a measure of date-press residue, or a bunch of herbs. Mākān sought reinforcement from Washmakīr, who was at al-Rayy. He reinforced him with a commander of his, called Shīraḥ b. al-Nuʿmān. When he reached Jurjān and saw the situation, he set about making peace between Abū ʿAlī and Mākān b. Kālī, so as to allow him a way to escape. Abū ʿAlī did that, and Mākān fled to Ṭabaristān. Abū ʿAlī took control of Jurjān in the latter part of the year 328, and appointed Ibrāhīm b. Sīmjūr al-Dawātī as his deputy over it, after he had set its affairs in order. He remained there until Muḥarram of the year 329, then marched to al-Rayy, as we shall relate.
