✧ Mention of Rukn al-Dawlah's March to Wāsiṭ In this year, Rukn al-Dawlah Abū ʿAlī al-Ḥasan b. Buwayh marched to Wāsiṭ. The reason for that was that Abū ʿAbd Allāh al-Barīdī dispatched an army to al-Sūs and killed a commander from the Daylam, so Abū Jaʿfar al-Ṣaymarī fortified himself in the citadel of al-Sūs, and he was in charge of its land tax. Muʿizz al-Dawlah Abū al-Ḥusayn Aḥmad b. Buwayh was in al-Ahwāz, and he feared that al-Barīdī might march against him from al-Baṣrah, so he wrote to his brother Rukn al-Dawlah, who was at the gate of Iṣṭakhr, having returned from Iṣbahān as we have mentioned. When his brother's letter reached him, he marched to him in haste, covering the stages until he arrived at al-Sūs. Then he marched to Wāsiṭ to take possession of it, since he had left Iṣbahān and had no realm of his own to rule independently. He encamped on the eastern side, while the Barīdīs were on the western side. Ibn Buwayh's men wavered, and a hundred of them sought safe-conduct to al-Barīdī. Then al-Rāḍī and Bujkam marched from Baghdād toward Wāsiṭ to fight him. He feared that the forces gathered against him would become too numerous and that his men would seek safe-conduct and he would perish, because he had not spent any money on them for a year. So he returned from Wāsiṭ to al-Ahwāz and then to Rāmahurmuz.
