Then the Year 326 AH Began

Translation

✧ Mention of the disorder of the affairs of the Qarmatians In this year the situation of the Qarmatians became corrupt, and they killed one another. The reason for that was that there was a man among them called Ibn Sanbar, who was one of the close associates of Abū Saʿīd al-Qarmaṭī and those privy to his secret. He had an enemy among the Qarmatians named Abū Ḥafṣ al-Sharīk. Ibn Sanbar approached a man from Isfahan and said to him: "If I make you master of the affairs of the Qarmatians, I want you to kill my enemy Abū Ḥafṣ." The man agreed to that and made a pact with him about it. Ibn Sanbar then acquainted him with the secrets of Abū Saʿīd and with signs that he mentioned were in the person they were summoning to. He went before the sons of Abū Saʿīd and mentioned that to them. Abū Ṭāhir said: "This is the one he is summoning to." So they obeyed him and submitted to him, until he would command a man to kill his brother and the man would kill him. If he disliked a man, he would say to him: "He is sick," meaning that he had doubted his religion, and he would command that he be killed. It reached Abū Ṭāhir that the Isfahani wanted to kill him in order to be alone in power. He said to his brothers: "We have erred regarding this man, and I will expose his condition." He said to him: "We have a sick person; look at him so that he may recover." They came and laid down his mother and covered her with a waist-wrapper. When he saw her, he said: "This sick person will not recover, so kill him." They said to him: "You have lied; this is his mother." Then they killed him after he had killed many of their great men and brave warriors. This was the reason they held fast to Hajar and abandoned raiding the lands and causing corruption in them.
