✧ Mention of Lashkarī's seizure of Azerbaijan and his killing In it, Lashkarī b. Murdā seized control of Azerbaijan. This Lashkarī was greater than the one previously mentioned, for this one was Washmakīr's deputy over the affairs of the province of al-Jabal. He gathered wealth and men and marched to Azerbaijan, where at that time Daysam b. Ibrāhīm al-Kurdī was, who was one of the followers of Ibn Abī al-Sāj. He gathered an army and he and Lashkarī fought, and Daysam was routed. Then he returned and gathered [forces], and they drew up in battle lines a second time, and he was routed again. Lashkarī took control of his lands except Ardabīl, whose people held out in it because of its fortification, for they possessed courage and valor, and it was the seat of the kingdom in Azerbaijan. Lashkarī corresponded with them and promised them good treatment because they had heard of the bad conduct of the Daylamites toward the lands of al-Jabal, Hamadhān and elsewhere. He besieged them, and the siege lasted long. Then his men climbed the wall and also breached it in several places and entered the town. Lashkarī would enter it by day and leave it at night for his camp. The people of the town hastened and repaired the breach in the wall, displayed disobedience, and renewed the fighting. He regretted his negligence and his failure to act decisively. The people of Ardabīl sent to Daysam, informing him of the situation and agreeing with him on a day when he would come and they would go out to fight Lashkarī, while he would come from behind him. He did so and marched toward them. They appeared on the appointed day in great numbers and fought Lashkarī, and Daysam came upon him from behind his back, and he was put to the most shameful flight. Many of his men were killed, and he withdrew to Mūqān, where its commander honored him, who was known as Ibn Dawla, and extended generous hospitality to him. Lashkarī gathered [forces] and marched toward Daysam, and Ibn Dawla assisted him. Daysam fled and crossed the Aras River, and some of Lashkarī's men crossed over to him, and Daysam was routed. He went to Washmakīr, who was at al-Rayy, and warned him of Lashkarī. He offered him money every year in exchange for sending an army with him. He agreed to that and sent an army with him. Lashkarī's army wrote to Washmakīr, informing him of their obedience to him and that whenever they saw his army, they would join him against Lashkarī. Lashkarī got hold of the letters, but he concealed that from them. When Washmakīr's army drew near him, he assembled his men and told them of that, and that he could not prevail with them, and that he would march them toward al-Zawzān, plundering the Armenians on his way, and then march toward al-Mawṣil and seize it and other places. They agreed to that. So he marched with them to Armenia, whose people were unaware, and he plundered, seized booty, and took captives. He reached al-Zawzān with the booty and encamped in the territory of an Armenian man. He offered him money to refrain from attacking him and his lands, and he agreed to that. Then the Armenian set an ambush in a narrow pass there and ordered some of the Armenians to plunder some of Lashkarī's goods and proceed through that pass. They did so, and the news reached Lashkarī. He rode out with five men and went after them. The ambush came out upon him and killed him and those with him. His army caught up with him and found him killed along with those with him. They returned and appointed his son Lashkaristān over themselves. They agreed to march over the pass of the Dragon, which lies beyond al-Jūdī, to safeguard their livestock and then return to the land of Ṭarm, the Armenian, and overtake them. That reached Ṭarm, and he stationed men at those passes to stone them and prevent their crossing. They killed many of them, and only a few were saved; among those who were saved was Lashkaristān. He marched with those with him to Nāṣir al-Dawla b. Ḥamdān at al-Mawṣil. Some of them stayed with him, and some of them went down to Baghdād. As for those who stayed at al-Mawṣil, he sent them with his cousin Abū ʿAbd Allāh al-Ḥusayn b. Saʿīd b. Ḥamdān to what he held of Azerbaijan, when Daysam came toward him to seize it. Abū ʿAbd Allāh was appointed by his cousin Nāṣir al-Dawla over the governorship of Azerbaijan. Daysam marched against him and fought him, and Ibn Ḥamdān had no strength against him. So he left Azerbaijan, and Daysam took control of it.
