Translation

✧ Mention of the war between Bajkam and al-Barīdī, and the peace after that When Bajkam stayed in Wāsiṭ and his importance grew, Ibn Rāʾiq feared him, because he suspected that Bajkam intended to seize control of Iraq. So he corresponded with Abū ʿAbd Allāh al-Barīdī and sought peace with him against Bajkam, such that if Bajkam were defeated, al-Barīdī would take possession of Wāsiṭ and guarantee it for six hundred thousand dinars per year, provided that Abū ʿAbd Allāh sent an army. Bajkam heard of that and became afraid. He consulted his companions about what he should do, and they advised him to move first against Abū ʿAbd Allāh al-Barīdī, not to advance upon the seat of the caliphate, and not to confront Ibn Rāʾiq until he had finished with al-Barīdī. So he assembled his army and marched to al-Baṣrah, intending to attack al-Barīdī. Abū ʿAbd Allāh dispatched an army numbering ten thousand men, commanded by his ghulām Abū Jaʿfar Muḥammad al-Ḥammāl. They met and fought, and al-Barīdī's army was routed, but Bajkam did not pursue them; rather, he held back from them. The Barīdīs were at Maṭārā awaiting the outcome of the situation. When their army was routed, they feared and their spirits weakened, but when he saw that his army was safe and none of them had been killed or drowned, his heart was reassured. Bajkam's intention was to humiliate al-Barīdī and cut him off from Ibn Rāʾiq, while his own mind was set on the capital. So on the second day after the rout, he sent to al-Barīdī, apologizing for what had happened and saying to him: "You began and provoked me. I have pardoned you and your companions. Had I pursued them, most of them would have drowned or been killed. I will make peace with you on the condition that I grant you Wāsiṭ when I take the capital, and that I enter into a marriage alliance with you." Al-Barīdī prostrated himself in gratitude to God Almighty, and Bajkam swore an oath, and they made peace. He returned to Wāsiṭ and began planning against Ibn Rāʾiq and the seizure of the capital at Baghdād.
