✧ Mention of Bujkam's seizure of al-Ahwāz When the reply to the message came from al-Barīdī to Ibn Rāʾiq with prevarication about returning his troops from al-Baṣrah, he summoned Badr al-Kharshanī and bestowed a robe of honor upon him, and he also summoned Bujkam and bestowed a robe of honor upon him, and he dispatched them both with an army, and commanded them to halt at al-Jāmidah. Bujkam hastened and did not wait for Badr and those with him, and marched to al-Sūs. That reached al-Barīdī, so he sent out against him a dense army of three thousand fighters, their commander being his ghulām Muḥammad, known as al-Ḥammāl. They fought on the outskirts of al-Sūs, and with Bujkam were two hundred and seventy men of the Turks. The companions of al-Barīdī were defeated and returned to him, so al-Barīdī struck Muḥammad al-Ḥammāl and said: "You fled with three thousand from three hundred?" He said to him: "You thought you were fighting Yāqūt the manager; there has come to you the opposite of what you were accustomed to." Then he rose up to him and began punching him with his fists. Then his army returned, and he added to them those who had not witnessed the battle, so they reached six thousand men, and he dispatched them again with al-Ḥammāl. They met at the river of Tustar, and Bujkam hastened and crossed the river, he and his companions. When the companions of al-Barīdī saw him, they fled without fighting. When Abū ʿAbd Allāh al-Barīdī saw them, he embarked with his brothers and those attached to him in the ships, and he took with him what remained with him of money, namely three hundred thousand dinars. The ship sank with them, and the divers brought them out after they had nearly drowned. Some of the money was brought out, and the remaining money was brought out for Bujkam. They reached al-Baṣrah and stayed at al-Ubullah, and they prepared vessels for flight if Iqbāl were defeated. Abū ʿAbd Allāh al-Barīdī dispatched his ghulām Iqbāl to Maṭārā, and sent with him a group of the youths of al-Baṣrah. They met at Maṭārā with the companions of Ibn Rāʾiq, and the Rāʾiqīyah were defeated, and a group of them was taken prisoner. Al-Barīdī released them, and wrote to Ibn Rāʾiq seeking to mollify him, and sent to him a group of the notables of the people of al-Baṣrah. He did not answer them, and they asked him to swear an oath to the people of al-Baṣrah so that they would be with him and help him. He refused and swore that if he gained victory over it, he would burn it and kill everyone in it, so they increased in resolve to fight him. The Barīdīs felt secure after the defeat of Ibn Rāʾiq's army, and they stayed then in al-Baṣrah. Bujkam seized al-Ahwāz. When the defeat of his companions reached Ibn Rāʾiq, he equipped another army and dispatched it by land and water. His army on land met the army of al-Barīdī, and the Rāʾiqīyah were defeated. As for the army on the water, they seized al-Kallāʾ. When Abū ʿAbd Allāh al-Barīdī saw that, he embarked in the ships and fled to the island of Uwāl, leaving his brother Abū al-Ḥusayn in al-Baṣrah with an army to defend it. The people of al-Baṣrah went out with Abū al-Ḥusayn to repel Ibn Rāʾiq's army from al-Kallāʾ, and they fought them until they drove them away from it. When that reached Ibn Rāʾiq, he marched in person from Wāsiṭ to al-Baṣrah by land, and wrote to Bujkam to join him. He came to him with the troops he had, and they advanced and fought the people of al-Baṣrah. The fighting intensified, and the people of al-Baṣrah defended, and they reviled Ibn Rāʾiq. When Bujkam saw that, he was dismayed, and said to Ibn Rāʾiq: "What have you done to these people that you have reduced them to this?" He said: "By God, I do not know." Ibn Rāʾiq and Bujkam returned to their camp. As for Abū ʿAbd Allāh al-Barīdī, he marched from the island of Uwāl to ʿImād al-Dawlah Ibn Buwayh, sought his protection, and made him covetous of Iraq, while the authority of the caliph and Ibn Rāʾiq was upon it. He sent with him his brother Muʿizz al-Dawlah, as we shall mention. When Ibn Rāʾiq heard of their coming from Fārs to al-Ahwāz, he dispatched Bujkam to it. Bujkam refused to march unless the war and the land tax were his responsibility, so he granted him that and dispatched him to it. Then a group of al-Barīdī's companions attacked Ibn Rāʾiq's camp at night, shouting around it, and they fled. When Ibn Rāʾiq saw that, he ordered the burning of his baggage and equipment so that al-Barīdī would not seize it as booty, and he marched to al-Ahwāz stripped. A group advised Bujkam to arrest him, but he did not do so. Ibn Rāʾiq stayed some days and returned to Wāsiṭ, and the rest of his army had preceded him there.
