Then the Year 325 AH Began

✧ Then the year 325 AH began. Account of al-Rāḍī billāh's march to war against al-Barīdī In this year, Muḥammad b. Rāʾiq advised al-Rāḍī billāh to go down with him to Wāsiṭ in order to draw near to al-Ahwāz and correspond with Abū ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Barīdī. If he responded to what was demanded of him, [well and good]; otherwise, the intention against him would be close at hand. Al-Rāḍī agreed to that and went down at the beginning of al-Muḥarram. The Ḥajariyya opposed this and said: "This is a trick against us, so that he may do to us the like of what he did to the Sājiyya." Ibn Rāʾiq paid no attention to them and went down; some of them followed him, then the rest went down after him. When they were at Wāsiṭ, Ibn Rāʾiq intercepted them and struck off most of them from the rolls, so they were disturbed and rose up. He fought them a fierce battle, the Ḥajariyya were routed, and a group of them was killed. When the defeated men reached Baghdād, Luʾluʾ, the chief of police in Baghdād, mounted and met them. He fell upon them, and they went into hiding. Their houses were plundered, their wealth and properties were seized, and their stipends were cut off. When Ibn Rāʾiq had finished with them, he killed those of the Sājiyya whom he had imprisoned, except Ṣāfī the treasurer and Hārūn b. Mūsā. When he was done, he had his own tents and al-Rāḍī's tents brought out toward al-Ahwāz to expel Ibn al-Barīdī from it. He sent to them concerning the matter of the withholding of funds, the arbitrary control he had undertaken over them, the corruption of the armies, and the embellishment of rebellion against them, along with other mention of his faults. Then after that he said: "If he delivers what is incumbent upon him and hands over the soldiers whom he has corrupted, he will be confirmed in his office; but if he refuses, he will be met with what he deserves." When he heard the message, he renewed the tax-farming contract for al-Ahwāz at 360,000 dinars each year, to be paid each month in its installment. He agreed to hand over the army when ordered to deliver it to the one who would march with them to fight Ibn Buwayh, since they disliked returning to Baghdād because of the scarcity of funds there and the discord. The envoys wrote that to Ibn Rāʾiq, who presented it to al-Rāḍī and consulted his companions about it. Al-Ḥusayn b. ʿAlī al-Nawbakhtī advised not to accept that from him, for it was deceit and a trick to get close to him, and whenever they turned away from him, he would not abide by what he had offered. Abū Bakr b. Muqātil advised agreeing to the tax-farming contract he sought and said: "No one else can take his place." He was partial to al-Barīdī. His opinion was heeded, the contract was concluded with al-Barīdī, and he and al-Rāḍī returned to Baghdād, entering it on the eighth of Ṣafar. As for the money, he did not deliver a single dinar of it. As for the army, Ibn Rāʾiq sent Jaʿfar b. Warqāʾ to receive it from him and to march to Fārs. When he reached al-Ahwāz, Ibn al-Barīdī met him with the entire army. When he returned, the army marched with al-Barīdī to his residence, and he took Jaʿfar along with him. He set before them abundant food, they ate and left, and Jaʿfar remained for several days. Then Jaʿfar ordered the army, and they demanded from him money to distribute among them so they could equip themselves for Fārs. He had nothing with him, so they reviled him and threatened to kill him. He hid from them and sought refuge with al-Barīdī. Al-Barīdī said to him: "The wonder is not at the one who sent you; the wonder is at you—how did you come with nothing? Even if the army were slaves, they would not march without money to satisfy them." Then he sent him out at night and said: "Save yourself." So he traveled back to Baghdād disappointed. Then Ibn Muqātil set about, together with Ibn Rāʾiq, dismissing al-Ḥusayn b. ʿAlī al-Nawbakhtī, his vizier, and advised him to seek support from al-Barīdī and make him his vizier in place of al-Nawbakhtī. He offered him thirty thousand dinars, but he did not agree to that. Ibn Muqātil kept striving and exerting himself until he agreed to it. One of the greatest reasons for Ibn Muqātil's attaining his goal was that al-Nawbakhtī was ill. When Ibn Muqātil spoke with Ibn Rāʾiq about dismissing him, he refused and said: "He has a great claim on me. He is the one who worked on my behalf until I reached this rank, so I will not seek a replacement for him." Ibn Muqātil said: "Al-Nawbakhtī is ill, and there is no hope of his recovery." Ibn Rāʾiq said to him: "The physician has informed me that he has improved and eaten francolin." He said: "The physician knows his standing with you and that he is the vizier of the state, so he will not tell you what you dislike about his condition. But summon al-Nawbakhtī's nephew and son-in-law ʿAlī b. Aḥmad, and ask him about him privately; he will inform you of his state." He said: "I will do so." Al-Nawbakhtī had appointed this nephew of his as his deputy with Ibn Rāʾiq to carry out his service during his illness. Then Ibn Muqātil parted from Ibn Rāʾiq on this, met with ʿAlī b. Aḥmad, and said to him: "I have secured the vizierate for you with the amīr Ibn Rāʾiq. So when he asks you about your uncle, tell him that he is on the point of death and that nothing will come from him, so that the vizierate may be completed for you." When Ibn Rāʾiq met with ʿAlī b. Aḥmad and asked him about his uncle, he fainted, then struck his own head and face and said: "May God preserve the amīr and magnify his reward concerning him; let the amīr count him only among the dead." Ibn Rāʾiq uttered the istirjāʿ and the ḥawqala and said: "If he could be ransomed with all that I possess, I would do it." When Ibn Muqātil came to him, Ibn Rāʾiq said to him: "You were right. We have despaired of al-Nawbakhtī. Write to al-Barīdī to send someone to act as his deputy in my vizierate." He did so and wrote to al-Barīdī to send Aḥmad b. ʿAlī al-Kūfī to act as his deputy in the vizierate of Ibn Rāʾiq. He sent him, and he took control of affairs. Al-Barīdī's situation improved through that, for al-Nawbakhtī knew him and his affairs would not go smoothly with him. When al-Kūfī and Ibn Muqātil took control, they set about having al-Baṣra farmed out from Abū Yūsuf b. al-Barīdī, the brother of ʿAbd Allāh. Ibn Rāʾiq refused that, but they deceived him until he agreed to it. Ibn Rāʾiq's deputy in al-Baṣra was Muḥammad b. Yazdād, who had behaved badly and wronged its people. When al-Barīdī took over its tax-farming, a group of the notables of its people came to him at al-Ahwāz, and he made promises to them and raised their hopes. He criticized Ibn Rāʾiq before them for what Ibn Yazdād had done, and they prayed for him. Then al-Barīdī sent his ghulām Iqbāl with two thousand men and ordered them to stay at the fortress of Mahdī until he commanded them what to do. When Ibn Yazdād learned of them, he was greatly alarmed and knew that al-Barīdī intended to seize al-Baṣra; otherwise, if he merely wanted to administer his tax-farming, a single agent with a small group would suffice. Al-Barīdī ordered the abolition of some of what Ibn Yazdād used to take from the people of al-Baṣra, so that they were reassured and fought with him against Ibn Rāʾiq's army. Then he turned against them and did such things to them that they longed for the days of Ibn Rāʾiq and counted them as festivals.
