Translation

✧ The ḥadīth of the worshipper and the pomegranate: On the authority of Jābir b. ʿAbd Allāh al-Anṣārī, who said: The Messenger of Allah ﷺ came out to us and said: "My intimate friend ﷺ left my presence just now. He said: O Muḥammad, by the One who sent you with the truth, there is among Allah's servants a servant who worshipped Allah for five hundred years on the summit of a mountain whose width and length are thirty cubits, with the sea surrounding it on every side for four thousand farsakhs. Allah brought forth for him a sweet spring of the width of a finger, flowing with fresh water, and it poured down at the foot of the mountain. And He brought forth for him a pomegranate tree that produced for him each day a pomegranate to nourish him for that day. When evening came, he would descend, perform ablution, take the pomegranate from that tree and eat it, then stand for prayer. He asked his Lord, Mighty and Majestic, at the time of death to take him while prostrating, and not to give the earth or anything that would corrupt him any way over him until He resurrected him while he was prostrating. So He did that. We pass by him when we descend and when we return, and we find him in the knowledge that he will be resurrected on the Day of Resurrection and stood before Allah. The Lord, Exalted is He, will say: 'Admit My servant into Paradise by My mercy.' He will say: 'My Lord, rather by my deeds.' He will say: 'Admit My servant into Paradise by My mercy.' He will say: 'Rather by my deeds.' Allah, Exalted is He, will say: 'Admit My servant into Paradise by My mercy.' He will say: 'My Lord, rather by my deeds.' Then Allah, Exalted is He, will say to the angels: 'Compare My servant with all of My blessings.' The blessing of sight will be found to have encompassed the worship of five hundred years, and the body will remain in excess over it. He will say: 'Admit My servant into the Fire.' He said: So he will be dragged toward the Fire, and he will say: 'O my Lord, by Your mercy admit me into Paradise.' He will say: 'Return My servant.' So he will be stood before Allah, Mighty and Majestic. He will say: 'O My servant, who created you when you were nothing?' He will say: 'You, O my Lord.' He will say: 'Was that from yourself or by My mercy?' He will say: 'Rather by Your mercy.' He will say: 'Who gave you strength to worship for five hundred years?' He will say: 'You, O my Lord.' He will say: 'Who settled you on a mountain in the midst of the deep sea, brought forth for you fresh water from salt water, and brought forth for you each day a pomegranate, though it only produces once a year? And you asked Me to take you while prostrating, and I did that by My mercy. Admit My servant into Paradise by My mercy. How excellent a servant you were, O My servant.' So Allah admitted him into Paradise. And Jibrīl ﷺ said: 'Things are only by the mercy of Allah, Exalted is He, O Muḥammad.'"
