the accounts of past peoples from the Israelites and others

Translation

✧ The ḥadīth of the two old women: From Abū Hurayrah: The Prophet ﷺ said: “All the wonders were among the Children of Israel; narrate from them and there is no harm. If I were to narrate to you the ḥadīth of the two old women, you would marvel.” They said: “Narrate to us, O Messenger of Allah.” He said: “There was among the Children of Israel a man who had a wife whom he loved, and with him was an old, aged mother, a truthful woman; and with his wife was her mother, an old, aged woman, an evil woman. She incited her daughter against the mother of her husband. Her husband used to listen to her and he loved her. She said to her husband: ‘I will never be pleased with you until you take your mother away from me’ – and both old women had lost their sight. She did not leave him until he went out with his mother and placed her in a desolate stretch of land, with no food or drink with her, so that wild beasts might eat her; then he turned away from her. When evening came, wild beasts surrounded her. An angel from among the angels came to her and said: ‘What are these sounds I hear around you?’ She said: ‘Good; these are the sounds of cattle, camels, and sheep.’ He said: ‘Let it be good,’ then left her. When morning came, the valley was filled with camels, cattle, and sheep. Her son said: ‘If only I went to my mother and saw what happened to her.’ He came and found the valley filled with camels, sheep, and cattle. He said: ‘O mother, what is this?’ She said: ‘O my son, this is Allah’s provision and His gift, since you disobeyed me and obeyed your wife regarding me.’ He carried his mother and drove with her what Allah Almighty had given her of camels, cattle, and sheep. When he returned with her to his wife and her wealth, his wife said to him: ‘By Allah, I will not be pleased with you unless you take my mother and place her where you placed your mother, so that what befell your mother befalls her.’ He went off with the old woman and placed her where he had placed his mother, then left her. When evening came, wild beasts surrounded her, and the angel whom Allah had sent to the previous old woman came to her and said: ‘O old woman, what are these sounds I hear around you?’ She said: ‘Evil, by Allah, and rough terrain; these are the sounds of wild beasts that want to eat me.’ He said: ‘Let it be evil,’ then left her; a beast came to her and ate her. When morning came, his wife said to him: ‘Go and see what happened to my mother.’ He went to look and found nothing of her except what the beast had left. He returned to his wife and told her, and she grieved for her mother with intense grief. He carried her bones in a cloak until he placed them before her daughter, and she died of grief.
