the accounts of past peoples from the Israelites and others
Translation
✧ The ḥadīth of Yarkhā: On the authority of Kaʿb, who said: The Children of Israel suffered drought in the time of Mūsā, and they asked him to pray for rain for them. He said, “Go out with me to the mountain.” So they went out. When he ascended the mountain, Mūsā said, “Let no man who has committed a sin follow me.” He said: More than half of the people turned back. Then he said a second time, “Let no one who has committed a sin follow me.” So they all turned back except a one-eyed man called Yarkhā the worshipper. Mūsā said to him, “Did you not hear what I said?” He said, “Yes.” He said, “So you have not committed a sin?” He said, “I know of none except something I remember; if it is a sin, I will go back.” He said, “What is it?” He said, “I was passing along a road and saw the open door of a chamber. With this eye of mine, the one that is gone, I caught a glimpse of a form I do not know what it was. I said to my eye, ‘You, before the rest of me, hastened toward sin; you shall not accompany me after this.’ So I put my finger into it and plucked it out. If this is a sin, I will go back.” Mūsā ﷺ said, “This is not a sin.” Then he said to him, “Pray for rain, O Yarkhā.” He said, “All-holy, all-holy! What is with You does not run out, and Your treasuries do not perish. You are not pleased with miserliness. So what is this by which You are not known? Give us rain now, now!” He said: The two of them went back wading through the mud. .
