✧ Mention of the notables who died in this year: 2357 - Aḥmad b. Mūsā b. al-ʿAbbās b. Mujāhid, Abū Bakr al-Muqrīʾ: He was born in Rabīʿ al-Ākhir in the year 245. He was the shaykh of the reciters in his time and the foremost among them over the people of his era. He related from many people, and al-Dāraquṭnī and others narrated from him. He was trustworthy and reliable. He resided on the eastern side. Thaʿlab used to say: "No one remains in our time more knowledgeable of the Book of Allah than Abū Bakr b. Mujāhid." Muḥammad b. ʿAbd Allāh b. al-Muṭṭalib said: I went to Ibn Mujāhid to recite to him, and a man with a full beard and a large head came forward and began to recite. He (Ibn Mujāhid) said: "Take it gently, O Khalīl. I heard Muḥammad b. al-Jahm say: I heard al-Farrāʾ say: 'Discipline the soul, then discipline the lesson.'" Abū al-Faḍl al-Zuhrī said: I was awakened [on the night in which Abū Bakr b. Mujāhid died. He said: 'O my son, do you see who died tonight?'] For I saw in my sleep as if a speaker said: 'The one who has upheld the revelation of Allah for fifty years died tonight.' When we awoke, Ibn Mujāhid had died. ʿĪsā b. Muḥammad al-Ṭūmārī said: I saw Abū Bakr b. Mujāhid in a dream as if he were reciting, and I said to him: 'O my master, you are dead and you recite?' And it was as if he said to me: 'I used to supplicate after every prayer and at the completion of the Qurʾān that He would make me among those who recite in their graves, [so I am among those who recite in their graves].' Ibn Mujāhid died on Wednesday at the time of ʿaṣr, and was taken out on Thursday, ten nights remaining of Shaʿbān of this year, and was buried in the cemetery of Bāb al-Bustān. He left behind a good amount of wealth. 2358 - Aḥmad b. Baqī b. Makhlad: Chief judge of al-Andalus. He related, and died there in this year. 2359 - Aḥmad b. Muḥammad b. Mūsā, the Jurjānī jurist: He narrated from Abū Ḥātim al-Rāzī and others, and died in this year. 2360 - Aḥmad b. Muḥammad b. Mūsā b. al-ʿAbbās, Abū Muḥammad: He was concerned with the matter of historical reports, seeking histories. He held the market inspection of the slave market and the market of Miṣr, and was written from. He died in Muḥarram of this year. 2361 - Aḥmad b. Jaʿfar b. Mūsā b. Yaḥyā b. Khālid b. Barmak, Abū al-Ḥasan al-Nadīm, known as Jaḥẓa: He had fine literary culture, abundant transmission of historical reports, versatility in many branches of knowledge, pleasing poetry, ready wit, and skill in singing. He died in this year [his bier came from Wāsiṭ]. Jaḥẓa said: I recited to ʿUbayd Allāh b. ʿAbd Allāh b. Ṭāhir b. al-Ḥusayn my verse: The world has called out upon itself, if there were in the universe anyone to hear How many a one confident in life have I laid to rest, And a gatherer whose gatherings I scattered. [He said to me: "Your fault toward time is perfection."] Ibn al-Muḥsin said: Al-Ḥusayn b. Muḥammad b. Sulaymān al-Kātib narrated to us, saying: Abū al-Ḥasan b. Ḥanash al-Kātib narrated to us, saying: Jaḥẓa said to us: One of the kings wrote me a money order, and I repeatedly went to the banker to collect it. When his stalling became prolonged, I wrote to him: If your prayers are scraps of paper, Traced with fingertips and palms, And the scraps avail me naught, Then here is my writing: take it for a thousand thousand. Abū al-Ḥasan said: My father took a medicine, and Jaḥẓa wrote him a note asking about his condition: Explain to me how you have become in the evening, And what happened with the condition, And how far the she-camel carried you Toward the empty abode. Jaḥẓa said: A poverty came upon me in which I spent [all] that I possessed until nothing remained in my house but reed mats. One morning I woke up more destitute than a ṭunbūr without a string. I thought about what to do with it, and it occurred to me to write to Maḥbara b. Abī ʿAbbād al-Kātib, who was my neighbor. He had given up administrative work two years before and kept to his house, and gout had afflicted him and made him bedridden until he could not move except carried on hands or in a litter. Along with that he was extremely elegant, proud, and of great wealth. I thought I would jest with him so that he would invite me, and I would take from him what I would spend for a while. So I wrote to him: What do you think of my luck, And a pot and cold dishes, And wine of a color That mimics the cheeks of virgins, And a listening place that does not err, From the lineage of Yaḥyā b. Khālid? Indeed, the neglecter of this Is deficient in manliness and cold. I was not aware until the litter of Maḥbara arrived, carried by his servants to my house, while I was sitting at my door. I said to him: "Why have you come, and who invited you?" He said: "You!" I said: "I only said to you, 'What do you think of this,' and I meant in your house. I did not tell you it is in my house. My house, by Allah, is emptier than the heart of the mother of Mūsā." He said: "Now I have come and I will not return. Rather, I will enter your place and summon from my house what I want." I said: "That is up to you." He entered and saw nothing in my house but a reed mat. He said: "O Abū al-Ḥasan, this, by Allah, is disgraceful poverty. This is crushing need. What is this?" I said: "It is what you see." He sent to his house and had bedding and furnishings brought, and his bed-maker came and spread them. They brought [brassware and candles] and other things needed. His cook came with what was in his kitchen, and his cupbearers came with trays, conical sugar loaves, fruit, and incense. He sat with me that day. The next day his servant handed me a purse containing two thousand dirhams and a bundle of fine clothes. He called for his litter and sat in it, and I escorted him a short way. When he reached the end of the courtyard, he said: "Stay where you are, O Abū al-Ḥasan. Guard your door, for everything in the house is yours." And he said to the servants: "Leave." So the door was closed on furnishings worth many thousands. Aḥmad b. Muḥammad b. ʿImrān said: Jaḥẓa recited to us: Say to those who have fortified themselves from a suitor In dwellings before which there are veils: If your doorkeeper stands between me and meeting you, Allah has no doorkeeper at His door. Abū al-Ḥusayn b. Dīnār said: Abū al-Faraj al-Aṣbahānī recited to me, saying: Jaḥẓa recited to us: We have a companion among the most skilled of people in miserliness, And the most excellent of them in it, though he has no excellence. He invited me as a friend invites his friend, So I came as one like me comes to one like him. When we sat for the meal, I saw him Regarding the eating as if it were from some of his own limbs. He sometimes gets angry and reviles his servant, And I know that the anger and reviling are because of me. I stretch out my hand secretly to take a morsel, But he glances at me askance, so I toy with the greens. Until my hand committed a crime against my own fate, For hunger deprived me of my reason. My right hand swooped toward the leg of a chicken, And it was dragged as my hand dragged its leg along with my own leg. Abū Ghālib said: Among the poetry of Jaḥẓa that reached us with a high chain is what Abū al-Ḥasan al-Fakk b. Kalkala al-Ṭunbūrī recited to us, and he used to say that he had reached the age of one hundred and fifteen years. He said: My teacher Jaḥẓa recited to us his own verse: You departed, and how many a sigh after a moan, Making clear to people my grief for you. I had manumitted my eyelids from weeping, But my longing for you has returned them to slavery. 2362 - Riḍwān b. Aḥmad b. Isḥāq b. ʿAṭiyya, Abū al-Ḥasan al-Tamīmī: He was Riḍwān b. Jālīnūs, and Aḥmad was nicknamed Jālīnūs. Riḍwān heard al-Ḥasan b. ʿArafa and Ibn Abī al-Dunyā. Al-Dāraquṭnī, Ibn Shāhīn, al-Kattānī, and al-Mukhalliṣ narrated from him. He was trustworthy. Al-Dāraquṭnī said: "We have not seen among our shaykhs anyone with a better memory for chains and texts than him, and he was the most knowledgeable in jurisprudence of the shaykhs. He sat with al-Rabīʿ and al-Muzanī." Abū Bakr al-Naysābūrī said: "I know someone who for forty years slept only crouching, who sustained himself each day with five grains, and who prayed the dawn prayer with the ablution of the last evening prayer." Then he said: "I am he, and all this was before I knew Umm ʿAbd al-Raḥmān. What do I say to the one who married me off?" Then he said after this: "Allah intended nothing but good." Ibn Nāṣir informed us, from [Abū] al-Qāsim b. al-Sarī, from Abū ʿAbd Allāh b. Baṭṭa, who said: "We used to attend the gathering of Abū Bakr al-Naysābūrī to hear the additions from him. He used to estimate that there were thirty thousand inkwells in the gathering. This continued for a short while. Then we attended the gathering of Abū Bakr al-Najjād, and he used to estimate that there were ten thousand inkwells in his gathering. People were amazed at that and said: 'In this short time, two-thirds of the people have gone.'"
