✧ Mention of the appearance of estrangement between Ibn Rāʾiq and al-Barīdī, and the war between them In this year also, estrangement appeared between Ibn Rāʾiq and al-Barīdī, and there were several causes for that, among them: that when Ibn Rāʾiq returned from Wāsiṭ to Baghdādh, he ordered those of the Ḥajarīs who had hidden to appear, so they appeared. He employed about two thousand men from among them, and ordered the rest to seek their stipends wherever they wished. They left Baghdādh and gathered on the road to Khurāsān, then went to Abū ʿAbd Allāh al-Barīdī, who honored them and treated them well, and disparaged Ibn Rāʾiq and found fault with him. He wrote to Baghdādh apologizing for accepting them, saying: "I feared them, so for this reason I accepted them," and he made them a means to cut off the money that had been agreed upon for him. It was mentioned that they conspired with the army that was with him and prevented him from carrying the money (that had been agreed upon for him). Ibn Rāʾiq sent to him, obliging him to expel the Ḥajariyya, but he made excuses and did not do it. Among them: Ibn Rāʾiq learned of what Ibn al-Barīdī had disparaged him with before the people of al-Baṣra, and that displeased him. He learned of the position of Iqbāl in his army at Ḥiṣn Mahdī, and it weighed heavily upon him. He accused al-Kūfī of favoring al-Barīdī and wanted to dismiss him, but Abū Bakr Muḥammad b. Muqātil, whose word was accepted by Ibn Rāʾiq, prevented him from doing so. He ordered al-Kūfī to write to al-Barīdī, reproaching him for these things and ordering him to withdraw his army from Ḥiṣn Mahdī. He wrote to him about that, and he replied that the people of al-Baṣra were hiding the Qarāmiṭa, and Ibn Yazdād was incapable of protecting them, and they clung to my companions out of fear of them. Abū Ṭāhir al-Hijrī had arrived at al-Kūfa on the twenty-third of Rabīʿ al-Ākhir, so Ibn Rāʾiq went out with his troops to Qaṣr Ibn Hubayra, and sent to the Qarmaṭī, but no matter was settled between them, so the Qarmaṭī returned to his country. Ibn Rāʾiq then returned and went to Wāsiṭ. That reached al-Barīdī, so he wrote to his army at Ḥiṣn Mahdī, ordering them to enter al-Baṣra and fight whoever prevented them, and he sent to them a group of the Ḥajariyya as reinforcement. Ibn Yazdād sent a group from his side to prevent them from entering al-Baṣra, and they fought at Nahr al-Amīr. The companions of Ibn Yazdād were defeated, but he brought them back and increased their number with every volunteer in al-Baṣra, and they fought a second time and were defeated again. Iqbāl and the companions of al-Barīdī entered al-Baṣra, and Ibn Yazdād fled to al-Kūfa. Ibn Rāʾiq was greatly distressed, and he wrote to Abū ʿAbd Allāh al-Barīdī, threatening him and ordering him to withdraw his companions from al-Baṣra, but he made excuses and did not do it. The people of al-Baṣra had at first desired al-Barīdī because of the bad conduct of Ibn Yazdād.
