✧ Mention of Mākān's Seizure of Jurjān In this year, Mākān b. Kālī seized Jurjān. The reason for that was that we mentioned earlier that when Mākān returned from Jurjān, he stayed in Naysābūr, and Bānjīn stayed in Jurjān. Then, after that, Bānjīn went out to play polo, and he fell from his mount and died. His news reached Mākān b. Kālī while he was in Naysābūr, and he had become uneasy about opposing the army of Khurāsān. So ʿAlī [b.] Muḥammad b. al-Muẓaffar, the commander of the army in Khurāsān, made the excuse that some of his men had fled from him and that he might go out in pursuit of them, and he was given permission for that. He marched from Naysābūr to Asfarāyīn, and he sent a group of his troops to Jurjān, and they seized it. He then openly rebelled against Muḥammad b. al-Muẓaffar, and he marched from Asfarāyīn to Naysābūr by surprise, while Muḥammad b. al-Muẓaffar was there. Muḥammad's companions abandoned him and did not support him, and he had only a small number of troops, unprepared for him. So he went toward Sarkhas, and Mākān returned from Naysābūr out of fear that the armies would gather against him. That took place in the month of Ramaḍān of the year 324 AH.
