✧ Mention of Muʿizz al-Dawlah b. Buwayh's march to Kirmān and what befell him there In this year, Abū al-Ḥusayn Aḥmad b. Buwayh, titled Muʿizz al-Dawlah, marched to Kirmān. The reason for that was that when ʿImād al-Dawlah b. Buwayh and his brother Rukn al-Dawlah had gained control of the lands of Fārs and the lands of al-Jibāl, and their youngest brother Abū al-Ḥusayn Aḥmad remained without a province over which he could exercise independent authority, they deemed it best to send him to Kirmān. So they did that, and he marched to Kirmān with a large army of brave men. When he reached al-Sīrajān, he took possession of it, collected its revenues, and spent them on his army. Ibrāhīm b. Sīmjūr al-Dawātī was besieging Muḥammad b. Ilyās b. Alīsaʿ in a fortress there with the armies of Naṣr b. Aḥmad, the ruler of Khurāsān. When news of Muʿizz al-Dawlah's approach reached him, he departed from Kirmān to Khurāsān, relieving Muḥammad b. Ilyās, who then extricated himself from the fortress and went to the city of Bamm, which lies on the edge of the desert between Kirmān and Sijistān. Aḥmad b. Buwayh then marched against him, whereupon he moved from his place to Sijistān without fighting. Aḥmad proceeded to Jīruft, which is the capital of Kirmān, and left one of his companions as his deputy over Bamm. When he approached Jīruft, a messenger came to him from ʿAlī b. al-Zanjī, known as ʿAlī Kilawayh, who was the chief of the Qafṣ and the Bulūṣ. He and his forefathers had been in control of that region, except that they would treat courteously every ruler who entered the land, obey him, and pay him a fixed sum of money, but would not come into his presence. He offered that money to Ibn Buwayh, but Aḥmad refused to accept it until after entering Jīruft. So ʿAlī b. Kilawayh fell back about ten farsakhs and encamped in a place difficult of access. Aḥmad b. Buwayh entered Jīruft, made peace with ʿAlī, took hostages from him, and had the khuṭbah delivered in his name. When the peace was settled and the matter concluded, one of Ibn Buwayh's companions advised him to make for ʿAlī, betray him, and raid him secretly by night while he was off guard. He tempted him with his wealth and made light of the matter because of his reliance on the peace. The amīr Abū al-Ḥusayn Aḥmad, because of his youth, inclined to that. He gathered his companions and set out against them by night with a detachment of cavalry. ʿAlī, however, was on his guard, and he and his men had placed spies to watch Ibn Buwayh. The moment he moved, the news reached him, so he gathered his companions and stationed them in a narrow pass on the road. When Ibn Buwayh passed by them, they fell upon him at night from all sides, killing and capturing many of his companions. Only a few of them escaped. The amīr Abū al-Ḥusayn received many blows, one of which struck his left hand and cut it off at the middle of the forearm. Another blow struck his right hand, severing some of his fingers. He fell, gravely wounded, among the dead. News of this reached Jīruft, and all of his companions who were there fled. When morning came, ʿAlī Kilawayh went through the dead and saw the amīr Abū al-Ḥusayn on the verge of death. He carried him to Jīruft, brought physicians to him, and took great pains in treating him. He apologized to him and sent his messengers to apologize to his brother ʿImād al-Dawlah b. Buwayh, informing him of his brother's treachery and offering his own obedience. ʿImād al-Dawlah accepted what he offered, and peace was established between them. ʿAlī released all the prisoners he held and treated them kindly. News reached Muḥammad b. Ilyās of what had befallen Aḥmad b. Buwayh, so he marched from Sijistān to the town known as Janābah. Ibn Buwayh set out against him, engaged him, and war between them lasted several days. Ibn Ilyās was defeated, and Aḥmad b. Buwayh returned victorious. He then marched against ʿAlī Kilawayh to take revenge on him. When he drew near, he made a night raid on him with his infantry, and they fell upon his camp at night on a night of heavy rain, inflicting losses, killing, plundering, and then withdrawing. Ibn Buwayh remained for the rest of that night. When morning came, he advanced against them, killed a great number of them, and ʿAlī Kilawayh fled. Ibn Buwayh wrote to his brother ʿImād al-Dawlah informing him of what had happened between him and ʿAlī and Ibn Ilyās and of their defeat. His brother replied, ordering him to remain where he was and not go beyond it. He sent him one of his commanders with orders that he return to him in Fārs, and he insisted upon that. So he returned to his brother and stayed with him at Iṣṭakhr until Abū ʿAbd Allāh al-Barīdī, fleeing from Ibn Rāʾiq and Bajkam, sought them out. ʿImād al-Dawlah then became eager for Iraq, and its conquest seemed easy to him, so he sent with him his brother Muʿizz al-Dawlah Abū al-Ḥusayn, as we shall mention in the year 326.
