✧ Account of the Barīdī's situation In this year, the affair of ʿAbd Allāh al-Barīdī grew strong, and his status became great. The reason for that was that he was the tax-farmer of the districts of al-Ahwāz. When Mardāwīj's army seized them and Yāqūt was defeated, as we have mentioned, al-Barīdī returned to al-Baṣrah, and he began to administer the lower districts of al-Ahwāz, in addition to Yāqūt's correspondence, and he traveled to Yāqūt and stayed with him in Wāsiṭ. When the two sons of Yāqūt were arrested, Ibn Muqlah wrote to Ibn al-Barīdī ordering him to calm Yāqūt and inform him that the troops had assembled and demanded the arrest of his two sons, so they were arrested to pacify the troops, and that they would soon travel to their father, and that the right course was for him to travel to conquer Fārs. So Yāqūt traveled from Wāsiṭ by way of al-Sūs, and al-Barīdī traveled by water route to al-Ahwāz. His two brothers Abū al-Ḥusayn and Abū Yūsuf had the tax-farm of al-Sūs and Jundī Sābūr, and they claimed that the revenue of the lands for the year 322 [AH] had been taken by Mardāwīj's army, and that the revenue of the year 323 [AH] could not be collected at all, because Mardāwīj's deputies had wronged the people, so they had nothing left to cultivate. The situation was the opposite in those two years. That reached the vizier Ibn Muqlah, so he sent a deputy of his to verify the situation, and he colluded with the two sons of al-Barīdī and wrote confirming their account, so they thereby obtained a great amount of money, and their situation became strong. The total amount they took was four million dinars. Ibn al-Barīdī advised Yāqūt to march to Arrajān to conquer Fārs, while he himself undertook the collection of funds from the lands, and he obtained what he wanted from them. When Yāqūt marched to Fārs with his gathered forces, Ibn Buwayh met him at the gate of Arrajān, and Yāqūt's companions were defeated and remained until the last of them, then he was defeated and Ibn Buwayh marched after him to Rāmahurmuz, and Yāqūt went to ʿAskar Mukram, and Ibn Buwayh stayed at Rāmahurmuz until peace was concluded between them.
