✧ Mention of the killing of Hārūn b. Gharīb In this year Hārūn b. Gharīb was killed. The reason for his killing was that he had been—as we mentioned—appointed by al-Qāhir over Māh al-Kūfah, its district al-Dīnawar, and over Māh Sabadhān and elsewhere. When al-Qāhir was deposed and al-Rāḍī was made caliph, Hārūn considered himself more entitled to the state than others because of his kinship to al-Rāḍī, as he was the son of the maternal uncle of al-Muqtadir. He wrote to the commanders in Baghdādh promising them kindness and increases in allowances, then he marched from al-Dīnawar to Khāniqīn. That weighed heavily upon Ibn Muqlah, Ibn Yāqūt, the Ḥajariyyah, and the Sājiyyah. They gathered and complained of him to al-Rāḍī, who informed them that he disliked him and permitted them to prevent him. They corresponded with him at first and offered him the road of Khurāsān as an increase over what was in his hand, but he was not satisfied with that. He advanced to al-Nahrawān and began collecting money, wronging the people and treating them harshly, and his power grew. Muḥammad b. Yāqūt marched out against him with all the armies of Baghdādh and encamped near him. The vanguards clashed with one another. Some of Muḥammad b. Yāqūt's men fled to Hārūn. Muḥammad corresponded with him, seeking to win him over and offering him concessions, but he would not agree to that and said, "There is no alternative to entering Baghdādh." When it was Tuesday, six nights remaining of Jumādā al-Ākhirah, the two armies advanced against each other and the fighting intensified. Hārūn's men gained the upper hand because of their numbers. Most of Ibn Yāqūt's men were routed, most of their camp was plundered, and wounds and deaths among them were many. Muḥammad b. Yāqūt went on until he crossed the bridge of Nahr Bīn. That reached Hārūn, so he rode toward the bridge alone, apart from his companions, hoping to kill Muḥammad b. Yāqūt or capture him. His horse stumbled with him on the bridge, and he fell from it into a stream. A servant of his named Yumn caught up with him and struck him with a tabarzīn until he weakened him and broke his bones, then he went down to him and slaughtered him, then raised his head and shouted takbīr. His companions were routed and dispersed; some of them entered Baghdādh secretly. Hārūn's camp was plundered, and a group of his commanders were killed and another group captured. Muḥammad went to the place of Hārūn's corpse and ordered it carried to his tent. He ordered him washed and shrouded, then prayed over him and buried him. He sent to his house someone to guard it from looting. He entered Baghdādh with Hārūn's head before him and the heads of a group of his commanders, and they were displayed in Baghdādh.
